| | 4 November 2016HIGHERReviewEditorialOn a visit to Pune in the late 1950s, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, was very impressed with its array of top-notch educational institutions that he gave the city the sobriquet of "the Oxford of the East." Indeed, with the quality of education, infrastructure, cultural platforms, available resources and reputable academicians, Pune has been always known as one of the major education capitals of India. Unlike other major cities in India, Pune has a rare distinction of offering education to most of the foreign students who come to India for further studies. While, approximately 4000 students from over 74 countries come here for studies every year, with the fast increasing number of migrants from other parts of India, the city is considered as one of the fastest growing urban areas in the country. The availability of large student population and talented personnel consequentially lead to a massive employable workplace in Pune. Today, we can see, many of multinational companies are venturing out of their nerve centres in Bangalore and Hyderabad, to make Pune the hub of their expansion plans. The long list of service providers in the city includes ITO providers such as Accenture, Cognizant, HCL, IBM, Infosys, TCS, Wipro and many more and BPO provider such as Convergys, EDS and EXL to name a few. Pune also has a significant number of captive setups of global firms such as Microsoft, Oracle, HSBC Software and Symantec. Clearly, Pune has always been the preferred choice for education setup in India. Hence, this issue of the Higher Education Review is focused upon the higher education scenario of Pune. In an attempt to identify the best educational establishments in the city, under the banner `Institute of the Year 2016, Pune,' we feature some of the most trusted educational institutes that are displaying their best performance in various sectors of education. On the cover, we feature Christ University's newly minted management campus that is located at the hill city of Lavasa, near Pune - Christ Institute of Management Lavasa. Sarath ShyamAsst.
