| | 4 May 2016HIGHERReviewEditorialPicture a scenario where a teacher passes out from District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) centre, earns his B.Ed or M.Ed degree, is excited and genuinely believes that he has the tools to help his students learn and enters the classroom. However, on entering the classroom, the teacher realizes that the students in his class are at completely different academic levels and he has no idea how to teach in such a situation. This may seem like an extreme example but it is the state of public school education in our country. This situation amalgamates and percolates through to higher education. The lack of proper faculty training is another issue that plagues teaching and consequently, students' ability to learn and perform well. There are various organizations working at the grass-root level such as TeachforIndia that try to address this issue and end up creating teachers that are sociologically and culturally equipped to deal with challenges that come with the job. Unfortunately, the scale of the problem is much larger than the scope of operations of such organizations.Disruption, which is now a part of the entrepreneurial vernacular, is a term that is thrown around across various sectors and levels. One sector that is yet to accept it in its ethos is Education. Waiting to be knocked by a disruptive opportunity, this sector has been longing for an innovative approach. With the largest college-age population in the world -- close to an overwhelming 125 million, it is astonishing that less than one in five of them is going ahead with post-secondary education as opposed to 90 percent in the US.
