| | 4 February 2018HIGHERReviewEditorialI have always felt that dentists are the people with one of the beautiful smiles around us. Though, later they will drill my teeth to make the cavity bigger than it was, the warmth of their smile and their aura of positivity have made me comfortable in the beginning of every consultation. Being the brand-ambassadors of their own business, perhaps, it is mandatory for these practitioners of entrepreneurial dentistry to welcome every client with such a positive attitude. Unlike many professions, dentistry is inherently entrepreneurial with large number of dental professionals opening private clinics after education. As a traditional market resilient to the radical fluctuation in the economy and safe from being displaced by the disruptive technologies, the solo dental practice has been a great passage to sizable personal income. However, the world of dentistry is changing. The 21st century offers a new set of opportunities for the millennial dentists. The data from the industry show that approximately 12, 000 to 15, 000 new private dental practices starts in the country every year and many of them struggle to take it forward due to the increasing cost of doing the business. Taking it as an opportunity, a surplus number of capital investors have stepped into this highly fragmented market, which can be easily consolidated to increase the profits. The fierce competition in the dentistry has not only instigated the existing solo practitioners to think out-of-the-box, but also helped the fresh graduates to avail varied opportunities that were not present a few years ago. Now, fuelled by solo, managed group and corporate practitioners offering general dentistry and specialist treatments, the dental market in India is expected to have a growth rate of 20-30 percent in the coming years. There is no better time than now to take up dentistry as a career.
