| | 4 December 2019HIGHERReviewEditorialWhen Dr. Radhakrishnan was chosen as the Chairman of University Education Commission by Govt. of India in 1948, numerous aspects such as the strengthening of higher education institutions, development of colleges and various academic departments, training of faculties, and establishment of open universities and distance learning programs were taken into consideration. Over the years, higher education in India has evolved at a tremendous speed. Pertaining to the number of universities and colleges, both private and government based, there has been a massive increase. Over 900 universities and more than 35000 colleges have sprawled within the country over the past few years; this includes both private and government institutions. The immense growth in the number of higher education institutions, and the advancements in the teaching methods within the country, especially in institutions like IITs and IIMs, has made India a popular higher education destination across the globe. This is very evident with the number of foreign students flying down to India to pursue their bachelors and masters each year. The ever-evolving education landscape in India is largely influenced by economic growth, the focus on adoption of skill-based education, open universities, vocational training, and even personalization of education coupled with the rapid urbanization. The demand for higher education amongst not just Indian students but also international students is likely to set a new high. According to a study published by E&Y, India is bound to have over 140 million young college-going students before 2030.
