Vikas Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences: An Emerging Centre- of-Excellence in Pharmacy Education

Established in the year 2008 by Society Professional Academy of Education and Research, Vikas institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (VIPS), Rajahmundry is a people oriented organization with a prime objective of providing quality education for all. VIPS started the B. Pharm from the academic year 2008-2009 and achieved the title of being the first college to introduce all the Pharmacy programs in the state of Andhra Pradesh. VIPS is not only emerging as a leader in the field of pharmaceutical sciences in the state of Andhra Pradesh, but is also positioning as the best education destination in the southern region of India.
All the programs are approved by Pharmacy Council of India, New Delhi and affiliated to Andhra University. "Now, we are positioning ourselves to make the institution as centre for excellence and a top class research institute," says Dr. T. V. Narayana, Director, VIPS. The institute is known for quality education since its inception. The institute provides sufficient amenities to achieve academic excellence and offers exposure to the international education through tie-ups with international collaboration. "More than 60 seminars, workshops were carried out by VIPS in last 9 years to update the student with latest developments taking place in Pharma Industry," claims Dr. Narayana.
Indian Pharma Industry being major exporter to more than 125 countries, the students are required to be well acquaint with norms, standards, regulations like WHO, USFDA, TGPLEX and so on. "Hence, we expose our students to organise various seminars and conferences under the umbrella of IPA Local branch, IPA student's chapter and NSS unit situated within the campus," claims Dr. Narayana. The institute has made it compulsory for students to get trained in handling all the major instruments available in the college. There are nearly 49 latest instruments identified and students have to submit a project report about handling and usage of these instruments.
The students are encouraged to participate in Indian Pharmaceutical Congress, IPA Students congress as registered delegates and also as volunteers. The students of VIPS also bagged Best Paper Award in71st IPSF- Students world congress at Hyderabad, 17th APTI Convention and 68th IPC and many more. The students also participated in 61st FIP world congress at Hyderabad and got certificate of appreciation from FIP president for volunteering their services. "Thus, through these seminars and workshops students obtain a global outlook," adds Dr. Narayana.
VIPS has tie up with more than 35 Pharma industries at Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad and Bangalore and students were well placed with good package. VIPS has provided 200 jobs to its students in last 4 years. 100 percent placement was given through Pharma Training institute in companies like Micro Labs, Medreich, Geltech, Apotex, Chemwell, Matrix, and so on. The students after the training will be posted to various industries where they will get training on hands of experience. This tie up is giving the maximum advantage of training the student to suit industry needs and for placement.
"We have a tie-up with Pharma training institute at Bangalore and the students get industry oriented training for a period of 40 days after final year exams. The students after the training will be posted to various industries where they will get training on hands of experience. This training assures that students become industry ready when they graduate from the institute," adds Dr. Narayana.
VIPS is having very strong alumni of 500 plus within 4 years of short span to its credit. The alumni use the social network and provide the information from time to time. They give information related to company profile, number of vacancies, requirements and other details useful to the aspirants. "In addition to these VIPS alumni involved in social and charitable activities also. To mention a few, campaigned on Prevention of Suicidal tendency in 2015 with 10000 prize money for the best campaigner, Swatch Bharat program at campus, financial assistance to 4 students to pursue their studies, Health campaign during Godavari Pushkara and many more," opines Dr. Narayana.
VIPS aims to deliver an international program beyond the limits of academic curriculum. It offers to deliver a wholesome and sound education in a state-of-the-art setting. "We provide necessary infrastructure, learning resources required for patenting and innovations. Through the Industry-Institute interaction, linkages envisaged along with the strategies for developing new products, services and patents, we are now trying to achieve the total quality management by implementing appropriate quality measures like Accreditation, ISO-9000, Bench marking, NIRF Rankings by 2020," concludes Dr. Narayana.

He is a well known personality in the field of Pharmacy Education both at National and International level. He completed his B.Pharm, M.Pharm and PhD from prestigious Andhra University and working as Director of Vikas Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and having 30 years of experience in Teaching, Research and administration. He is State and National Merit holder during his studies and also winner of Sri B.V. Patel Trust Memorial scholarship for securing first seat in B.Pharm in Andhra University in 1980.
