It was Pythagorus who once said, "Choices are the hinges of destiny."Especially, when one is at the crossroads of choosing a career and the decision taken at that moment decides the course for the future, then certainly choices are indeed the hinges of destiny. . When it comes to higher education, opportunities definitely follow those who select the right academic subjects for study at the right time. Namita Krishnan always aspired to pursue engineering after her twelfth grade. However, she was unable to identify opportunities and the institutions that could provide her the desired choice of higher education. In the process, she learnt that she was not alone; many of the other students had gone through similar experiences. Finding the right institute for the courses and degrees they wanted to pursue to other details such as course fees, living expenses, was a painful ordeal. After much searching, she finally came across Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management which is affiliated to VTU & AICTE and approved by the Govt. of Karnataka & HRD Ministry, Govt. of India and found to her satisfaction that the institution promotes quality education in the area of technical education which strives to develop as a world class technical institute that imparts quality education for the students. Sahyadri has created the right academic ambience to realize a student's full potential by imparting quality technical education fostering research, innovation and creativity through competent human resources with state-of-the-art infrastructure.
The Guiding Light
"A significant part of the onus of educational progress rests on the shoulders of the teachers", believes Dr. U. M. Bhushi, Principal, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management. With this in mind, the institute offers unconventional methods to provide the students with a closer view of the elements of learning. The faculty members at Shayadri comprise of doctorates and post graduates from IITs, NITs and other reputed institutions. The project activities, seminars, paper presentations and workshops are included in the curriculum in order to help students gain concrete learning. The institute regularly invites experts from industry and academia for interaction with the students and conducts orientation programs for their growth. The Principal states that this aids the students to know the skills essential at the job front by offering the right combination of technical skills and soft skills. Further, Sahyadri has academic collaborations with Mangalore University for research, Allahabad IIIT, Ghent University Belgium and Czech Republic Pardubice University for faculty exchange and M.Tech students.
Campus Life: Involvement is Important
The campus life provides and supports meaningful growth and development of the students throughout their student life of learning experience. "Through active partnership with our students, opportunities are created for hands-on learning, self-discovery, leadership, teamwork, diversity, community service in an environment that is rewarding, energetic and fun" says Dr. U. M. Bhushi. Spread across 35 acres of land, the Sahyadri campus has spacious classrooms with audio-visual facility, well-equipped laboratories as per AICTE norms, library, seminar halls, an auditorium with modern acoustic facilities, food court with a unique ambience and a well developed sports ground with 400 meters athletic track. The institute leaves no stone unturned to provide a congenial environment for education with its serene and refreshing atmosphere.
To train the students as per the requirements of the industry, Sahyadri has a separate Placement and Training Department which through extensive industry-specific soft skills training enhances the effectiveness of the students aspiring for placement. To make the students' industry ready, the institute has stringently implemented soft skills training that include communication skills, confidence building, leadership, resume writing, interpersonal skills, stress management, etiquette, and corporate culture amongst the others.
In addition, the department also promotes the spirit of entrepreneurship through its tie-up with the National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN). "With more than 130 companies visiting the campus every year, we have maintained a fair placement record. MNCs such as IBM, Cognizant, L&T, TCS, Kirloskar Toyota have been some of the major recruiters," he explains. In the near future, the institute aims to achieve an autonomous status along with ABET accreditation.

Dr.Umesh M Bhushi is the Principal of Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management since 2011. He is an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, wherein he pursued his M.tech and has his PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management and BE in Mechanical Engineering. He has an experience of 28 years of teaching and 10 years of Administrative and Research experience. He is a part of the 5th Academic Senate Member for 2013-16 for VTU Belgaum. He has 79 publications in International and National journal and has also authored 3 books. He has guided 3 PhD scholars and is in the process of guiding another 5. He has delivered more than 150 invited talks for industry and academia. His areas of interest include Total Quality Management, Strategic Management, Knowledge Management and Supply Chain Management.
