Uka Tarsadia University: Creating more Leaders than Followers

A land that witnessed the historical movement 'Bardoli Satyagraha' in 1928, led by India's Iron Man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Bardoli is a city located 35 km away from the Surat District. This city holds a great legacy in terms of taking initiatives for the betterment of the society and carrying forward this heritage Bardoli Pradesh Kelawani Mandal (BPKM) came into existence in 1960. "The journey was started with a goal of imparting higher education opportunities in and around the rural and tribal areas of Bardoli by the establishment of Gopal Vidyanagar Campus (GVC) under BPKM. The number of institutes and programs kept adding year after year and this led to the transformation of GVC into Uka Tarsadia University (UTU) in October 2011," elaborates Dr. Dinesh R. Shah, Founder Provost, UTU.
Regarded as one of the fastest thriving university in Gujarat with student strength of more than 11000, UTU is growing by leaps and bounds standing strongly by its objective of serving the society by creation, augmentation, dissemination, and perpetuation of knowledge through the highest level of learning and research. The University has seven faculties in the campus which offers 80 different UG, PG, and Ph.D. programmes that are classified into 19 Constituent Institutes and Departments. From Engineering and Technology, Computer Science to Medical and Paramedical Sciences, UTU have tried to cover almost all the domains, which are most demandable among the student community with optimum options of courses.

Shri Kirit Patel, Vice-President, UTU, opines, "Our students are rendered a congenial and conducive academic atmosphere to study. The campus is designed in a manner which takes care of the detailed needs of the learners and ultimately makes their tenure at the University a fruitful one". The University management has laid sizeable emphasis on including adequate infrastructure and learning resources in the form of well-furnished classrooms, fully equipped laboratories, computer lab with latest configuration systems, modernized library, comfortable hostels and so on.
Research-Oriented Approach
Granting high priority to research, UTU always motivates its students and faculty members to indulge into research activities on regular basis, given which the University has a Research Council (RC), responsible for monitoring and addressing all matters related to research. "UTU has till date organized and hosted over 250 National and International workshops, expert sessions and conferences, encompassing a wide diversity of research areas and many of these events have received financial assistance from various funding agencies to the tune of Rs. 300 Lakhs," claims Dr. Shah. The campus is beatified with a number of centers and labs such as BOSCH Engineering center of excellence, IBM computer center, Plant tissue culture lab � approved by Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission, Civil engineering testing lab and many more.
Dr. Dinesh Shah adds, "For extensively use in teaching at both UG and PG levels as well as research, the University has purchased sophisticated equipment worth more than Rs. 15 Crores and licensed software of Rs. 1.2 Crores". Both students and teachers utilizing the best offerings of the University as of now have presented around 238 research findings at various forums at International, National, and State level, in either oral or poster mode. Owing to the cordial relationship and associations with the International Universities, UTU also had research scholars from Nigeria for research in the biotechnology.
The University enjoys academic arrangement with Cape Breton University, Canada, Harrisburg University, Canada and University of Ilorin, Nigeria. UTU is tied-up with AIESEC, which is collaborated with many foreign universities, and this helps to carry out the student cultural exchange programmes. "Our students frequently visit Europe, USA and South Asian countries for study, cultural and heritage tour and vice versa,"shares Dr. Rozy Patel Director Humanities.

The University strives to develop the students holistically. Whether they desire to grab a good job or have entrepreneurial dreams, UTU nurtures the students to grow considerably in every possible way. The Entrepreneur Development Cell which is set up under AICTE Quality Improvement Schemes and UTU motivates the students through conducting workshops and seminars. Further, collaborating with Centre for Entrepreneurship Development (CED) - Gujarat Government Organization for entrepreneurial activities, UTU has completed nine CED training sessions of 15 days in South Gujarat. The UTU has been also sanctioned with DST sponsored lab and Gujarat Government sponsored Incubation Center under Student Startup Innovation Policy.
Shri Shailesh Patel President UTU says, "We are equally concerned for the job seekers, an account of which the Placement Cell along with Soft skill development cell of the University undertakes necessary actions such as guiding in internship prospects, industry interface and so on". The cell organizes special sessions for confidence building, professional etiquettes, body language and personality development of the students resulting which the students after completing their stay at UTU successfully gets recruited by companies of repute like L & T, Reliance, TCS, Sun Pharmaceuticals, Alembic Pharmaceuticals, Biocon, and ICICI, just to name a few. The quality that the University has manifested over the years has already brought it in the list of 200 ranking of UGC-MHRD ranking and in next couple of years; UTU aspires to be in the league of Top 50 Universities at National Level.

With an overall experience of 36 years, Dr. Shah has taught various subjects at Pharmacy UG/PG levels and has attained several conference proceedings. He has published 58 papers in International journals, 32 papers in National journals and 28 papers in proceedings of International & National conferences. He had been associated with the establishment of Maliba Campus since its Inception.
