Swamy Vivekanandha College of Pharmacy: To Fulfil the Need for Adept Healing Hands

With educational excellence as the motto, Angammal Educational Trust under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. M. Karunanithi, B. Pharm., M.S., Ph.D., D.Litt, laid the foundation for the Swamy Vivekanandha College of Pharmacy (SVCP) in the year 1992. Located in the Namakkal District, Tamil Nadu, the institute endeavours its best by rendering and implementing various significantly productive programs to benefit the women's community to create a productive impact worldwide, technically and economically.

Starting with pharmacy, today Vivekanandha educational institutions has 22 colleges covering School, Arts and Science, Engineering, Management, teacher training, Nursing, Dental, Pharmacy and Allied health sciences and stands as Asia's largest educational institution for women's education with a "Dedicated mission to educate women" for the contribution to the women's education our chairman was awarded with titles Vidhya Rathna, Rashtiya Rattan, Hind Rattan, Kongu Nattu Sathanaiyalar.

At SVCP, More than 90 percent of students who register with the placement cell for campus placements receive job offers before the leave the campus.

The college affiliated to the Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai with an approval by the Pharmacy Council of India and AICTE offers diploma in pharmacy, bachelor of pharmacy, master of pharmacy, doctor of pharmacy and PhD courses. All these courses aim at making the students professionally competent Pharmacists. "Our faculty members are dedicated and play an important role in fulfilling the set goal. We impart an orientation cum sensitization programs in the starting of the academic year in which, all the faculties interact with students and highlight various aspects of curriculum and the best practices of the institute," pinpoints Dr. G. Murugananthan, Principal, SVCP.

The mentor system is effective in the institute, which helps the students to overcome the initial and regular difficulties. "We follow a teaching strategy where the learning necessities of slow, moderate and fast learners are well catered," adds Dr. Murugananthan. Students are given responsibilities to organize and observe the identified days of importance as social outreach activity at every class level to manage the skills of time management, teamwork, planning and the execution of the events.

'V- Discover' is a student's wall magazine of the institute, providing a platform to showcase the individual talents related to pharmacy and science. The well-maintained herbal garden, sophisticated and CPCSEA approved animal house with institutional animal ethical committee, CDCSO approved the institutional ethical committee and multi specialty hospital for training the students are the major highlights of SVCP. "In order to make the students industry ready, we organize numerous industrial visits. We also adopt other relevant measures to provide the students with the required exposure about the industry," says Dr. Murugananthan.

The guest lectures and talks of the eminent industrialists, technical heads, and HR Managers also help in inculcating the industrial needs, technical skills and soft skills required to adapt with the work place. The institute has MOUs for training the students with Allwin laboratories. "We also have access to visit and train our students in Prakruthi Products, SKM Siddha and Ayurvedha, Global Biotech and Avin Milk Dairy and so on. The leading scientists from The Himalaya Drug Company, Bangalore has visited our college for conference and shared their experiences," claims Dr. Murugananthan. The institute maintains tie-ups with the central leather research institute (CLRI), Par formulations, Appasamy lab, Life Line Polyclinic, Forts India, Mylan labs ltd and Saimera pharmaceuticals for helping the students in their industry related training and support.

SVCP organizes yearly two conferences and workshops relevant to industrial approach and clinical approach required for the students. Most of the PG students are deputed to carry out their research work in industry itself. "As a group of institutions, we have multi disciplinary research centre in our campus where the students are exposed to know the global outlook in other fields," pinpoints Dr. Murugananthan.

"Most of the students are employed in QA, QC, production in industry and few are selected for R&D. Forts India, Mylan labs, Saimera pharmaceuticals, TCS and Yoham BPO are among our stake holders," claims Dr. Murugananthan. A few PG students of SVCP have entered into educational field as lecturers.

"As a 25 year old institution, we have our alumni spread over the globe. Our alumni who are employed in industries and clinical area support our current students for their placements. We have organized alumni meet in a regular interval at campus. Our management also organized such meet once in Chennai and Bangalore," concludes Dr. Murugananthan. Today, as an institution going to celebrating its silver jubilee in 2017 now makes a move to reach few long term and short-term goals. It is obvious that the institute is growing at its faster pace, which will surely leave its indelible footmarks in all of its kind all over the world emanating its radiance towards women emancipation.

He has 18 years of teaching and research experience. He has published 26 research articles in reputed national and international journals and presented 30 papers in various conferences. He delivered invited guest lecturer in few colleges and participated as resource person in conferences. He is a reviewer for 3 journals and also senate member in The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR medical University, Chennai.
