Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology: Changing the Face of Civil Engineering Education
Dr. S.Thangavelu, Chairman, Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology
Considering the size of India's construction industry to reach USD 1 trillion by 2030 and contribute to 13 percent of the country's GDP by 2025, the industry is poised to become the largest employer by 2022, employing more than 75 million people. These statistics directly signifies that the country is in dire need of civil engineers, or to say 'skilled civil engineers', the ones who can contribute positively to the growth of the overall industry. Gaining much appreciation from the industry for fabricating a class of global engineers who are imbibed with top-notch skills and values, Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology (SIET) from the very beginning has been instrumental in changing the way how young engineering aspirants are been nurtured and educated. Based in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, SIET, an autonomous institution, approved by AICTE, New Delhi and have been accredited A Grade by NAAC.
Dr. S.Thangavelu, Chairman, SIET says, "It was a dream to establish an engineering institute with a difference which got materialized in 2006 in the form of the commencement of SIET. Holding an extensive 28 years of experience in academics and being an Agriculture Engineer myself, I always had aspired to fill the gaps that are prevalent in the existing engineering institutes of the country." Started with around 240 intakes of students, 12 years down the lane, SIET has intensified the limit to around 1000 intake annually and houses 3600 students inside its campus. The Institute welcomes applications of students for 10 UG and 5 PG programmes along with offering Ph.D. in four departments. Covering almost all the major engineering domains, SIET's Civil Engineering Department is regarded highly among those who are optimistic to take up a career in the civil engineering field.

Recently received the autonomous status, the institute always puts relentless effort to maintain the quality of education and go beyond the regular curriculum. "Although we had been affiliated to Anna University all these years, we never stopped to incorporate additional activities or programme which can enable our students to remain unique in the job market," pinpoints Dr. Thangavelu. The Department of Civil Engineering of the Institute besides conducting the regular curriculum takes the plunge to organize various value-added and industry relevant courses like Auto CAD, Ansys, Nastron, Staad and so on, aiming to strengthen the knowledge base of the students. Dr. Thangavelu adds, "All these placement-oriented courses go hand in hand in the campus by indulging students in some extra hours after their classes and on Saturdays."
First-Rate Placement
One of the many aspects that SIET has been strictly looking after from the day one of its establishment is acknowledging a highly qualified and experienced pool of faculty members in its board. Dr. Thangavelu says, "Faculty members impact the learning process of the students in a big way. Hence, we make sure that our teaching staffs are updated with the latest knowledge and skills by asking them to undergo certificate courses in the areas which are demandable for a particular domain of engineering. For instance, concepts like metro rail and aerodrome construction are in high demand in the civil engineering domain today, so we have encouraged our faculty members to pursue a certificate course on the same." In fact, to make sure that the faculty members' deliver their best capabilities in the classroom the institute has made it compulsory for them to get at least one certification every semester through online mode.
Dr. Thangavelu shares, "The Civil Engineering De-partment firmly believe in promoting practical-oriented education, given which the students throughout the year are boosted to visit plants and undertake projects and complete internships with giant companies, letting each one of them get equipped with ample hands-on experiences by the time they graduate." The Department has classified its learning system according to semesters in the account of producing responsible civil engineering wherein, in the first semester the students are taught value education, in the second semester they are enlightened about interpersonal values followed by family values in the third semester and business & global values in the fourth semester. In order to support the activities happening in the campus which is spread over 30 acres of land, the institute has placed finest facilities and infrastructure such as environmental testing lab, testing machines, plasma lab, bus facility, hostels, cafeteria and many more.
On the other hand, the institute every year takes initiatives to place all its students who have registered themselves for placements by brushing their varied skills during the course tenure. This year, the institute has greeted over 150 companies for recruitment pro-cess. "Students and their futures are our priority. From teaching them foreign languages like Japanese, French and German to offering various scholarships based on merits, performance and sports, we always go the extra mile for their betterment," proudly says Dr. Thangavelu. With strong alumni strength of 5000+ alumnus, a dedicated alumni association and sound industry connection, SIET in the coming 10 years envisions earning the status of University.
