Where Faculty members are Facilitators:
The success story of SNS College of Engineering (SNSCE) spans across eight years of existence, with over 250 faculty members. The professors at this institute are not mere faculty members they call themselves facilitators. To create a practical learning culture and professional ambience, we have developed an ecosystem here where faculty members act as facilitators. The role of a teacher here is to demonstrate the working of a technical system once and then facilitate the students to do the same, explains Dr. N. Gunasekaran, Principal, SNSCE.
M. Madhan, a Mechanical Engineering student, is one among many beneficiaries of institutes progressive pedagogy and faculty guidance. Today M. Madhan has a patent in his name for his invention titled Prolonged Energy Track One, which aims to provide an uninterrupted supply of power to electric vehicles. The invention is aimed at meeting the daily urban electric vehicle charging requirements. M. Madhans invention could prove to be very useful in a country such as India where the fuel prices are unpredictable to say the least. Another group of students from Mechanical department brought laurels to the institute by winning third prize in \\\"Best Student Innovator Award\\\" declared by ICTACT for the project titled \\\"Increasing the Efficiency of the Engine by Electrolysis & Preheating\\\" guided by Dr. R. Sudhakaran - Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering. We have a Research and Development cell which promotes the culture of innovation in the institutes by communicating with various scholars from outside and gives an insight about the latest areas of research and technology to our students and teachers, says Dr. N. Gunasekaran.
At present, SNSCE hosts three research centers and many Anna University approved research supervisors in the campus with couple of departments ready to be labeled as research centers. Being one among the research supervisors in the institute and holding the experience of guiding many PhD candidates, Dr. N. Gunasekaran says, Due to lack of significant research in the technical education sector, students in the country do not get the exposure to latest technologies, which is creating a huge skill gap. Here, we are in the pursuit of narrowing the gap by promoting research and imbibing industry culture through our own value added programs.
Senior Faculty members have conducted research in close association with various industries and they understand the ongoing scenario in this sector better than anyone. They say, In their academic career, they have developed a good network with key professionals in the industry as well as in the education sector. I utilize this extensive network to train their colleagues here. Other than the institute\'s own training programs, it is mandatory for faculty members of SNSCE to attend FDPs that are conducted by AICTE and other reputed institutions like IITs and NITs. FDP sessions that have been conducted by central agencies are a platform to connect with professors from other institutions and they would be disseminating their expertise through various means, says Dr. N. Gunasekaran.
Today, with the state-of-the-art infrastructure, highly skilled and dedicated facilitators and outstanding placement and training cells with successful proven track records, SNSCE keenly concentrates on continual knowledge enrichment that moulds students to achieve excellence in all their endeavors. Here, faculty members and students converse in a language expected by the industry as well as today\'s technical education sector a significant prerequisite while stepping into the shoes of facilitators and achievers.
