Six Handshakes are all it Takes

The higher education industry in India is best described as fragmented. Just as every job seeker benefits from references, our country's educational system would greatly benefit from few handshakes.

In May 1973, a study was published by Mark S. Granovetter, titled The Strength of Weak Ties. The popular sociological study states that every person on the face of the earth is connected to everyone else through a series of six introductions or less. This theory of networking is quite relevant to today's education and job world. Besides having the right credentials possessing the right references are becoming an increasing requirement. An example of this are private educational institutions all over the country that are marketing themselves as institutes that are tied-up with universities abroad and have MoUs with key industry players. This allows students to visualize their final year abroad and a dual certificate for both universities and the MoUs provide them with hands on industry experience. However it is the curriculum and the methodology of knowledge transfer that is still suffering from the lack of innovation.

The co-existence of high graduate unemployment and shortage of skills reflect the paradoxical nature of the Indian higher education system. To be rid of this mismatch, capacity of the higher education system has to be aligned to the job markets.
