At Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, the Department of Business Administration came into existence in the year 2008 just one year post its inception in 2007 with an intake batch of over 60 students which then scaled to 120 within two years' span and then immediately moved up to 180 till date. Dr. Vishal Samartha, Director, Department of Business Administration, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management says, "In line with the institution, the Department of Business Administration has a vision to be a Centre of Excellence by imparting quality Management Education for economic development in a knowledge driven society. This is accomplished by providing a conducive learning environment to excel in management education and research, imparting Teamwork, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills through co-curricular and extra-curricular activities and establishing startups and inculcate self-employment culture through industry connect programmes."
Encouraging Learners to Embrace Startup Ecosystem
Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management offers B.E. Degree, Post-Graduation in MBA and Ph.D. Research Programs. The total staff and student strength at campus is nearly 4000. The college also has Academic MoUs with various National and International Universities and has collaborations with leading corporate houses and Industries.
With its competent faculty and unique curriculum, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management aims to target the FIVE major Future Skills declared by NASSCOM namely AI/Big Data, Cyber Security, IoT, Robotics & 3D Printing and AR/VR/MR. Entire Teaching & Non-Teaching fraternity is deputed in one of these five Future Skills. Regular sessions are held during weekends by in-house and external experts to up-skill employees and gear them up for the future. More than five sessions in each vertical is already completed. "Mentor-Mentee system is being rigorously followed and the Mentors guide the overall development of their respective Mentees. They not only provide project assistance but also help in their placements, Internship, Industry Interactions and so on. Slow learners are hand-held by the respective mentors and given continued support till not only clearing exams but also placements and their growth in their organizations," adds Dr. Vishal. Teachers are venturing into Start-ups, the result of which is the 2 LLPs in the department which has encouraged more and more students to take up start-up for career.
In order to provide hands-on experience for the students both Engineering and MBA, the institution has 12 LLP's and 10 in-house Industries in the campus. Students are deputed on internship and mentored by the industry heads and faculty coordinators. This has not only opened doors for employment of our students but has also motivated students to grow as entrepreneurs.
"At Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, students are given Soft Skills Training, Aptitude Training, and Experiential learning through Outbound Training, Advanced Excel, SPSS Software and R Programming Training along with additional value added courses like Payroll Administration, EY Course on Accounting & Financial Management, Digital Marketing and Data Analytics to cope up with the highly demanding business scenario. Students are given opportunities and leads for paid internships in order to gain real time experience in the industry set-up. They are also taken on Mentor-wise Industry Visits to interact with the Company heads. This has strengthened industry-academia interface as there are Industry experts visiting the campus and interacting with the students as well," shares Dr. Vishal Samartha. The college has entered into MOUs with industry bodies like CII, FKCCI and KCCI for industry academia interactions and activities are driven in collaboration with them to stay connected with the latest development.
Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management lays major emphasis on Future Skills and Inter-disciplinary collaboration. "Our students are joining hands with the engineering students in technical events to pitch in their business ideas and provide assistance in costing and pricing. Apart from this, our students are taking up Social Innovation Projects in groups and best problem statements are taken ahead for funding. Students at Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management are also encouraged to walk-in with an idea and walk out after engineering with a Product and are also given seed money for their own Start-Up," speaks Dr. Vishal.
Out of the 12 LLP's and 10 in-house Industries in the campus, one of the industries caters to Nuclear Power Plants, DRDO and ISRO, another in-house industry has manufactured Li-FI, an instrument which transmits data in a closed environment using the LED light. More than 500 students of first year Engineering have participated in various Technical and Management Fests held every year at Premier Institutes like IIT, NIT, IIM's and many more have even won several prizes at these events. Equal encouragement is given to Sports and other extra-curricular activities wherein students have won places at State and National Level. Sahyadri has emerged as Champions seven times in University Level Athletic Meet. The Girls Team has won the Championship twice in University level Weight Lifting Competition. The Girls Team has also won Championship four times in University level Powerlifting. Overall, Sahyadri stands 4th in all VTU affiliated institutions in Sports and Cultural Events.

Students are motivated to take up Online courses on SWAYAM, UDEMY, NPTEL and which are related to other domains in order to enhance their knowledge and increase their confidence to take up any challenging position in any domain apart from their core area of interest.
The in-house LLP of MBA Department named 'Sahyadri Capital Advisors LLP' not only provides internship opportunities for students but also gives NISM certification courses along with opportunities to invest in Financial Products and Services. They have hands-on experience on Trading as a Terminal is already set-up. Another LLP of MBA, 'Sahyadri HR Solutions LLP' is driven by the Faculty however operated by the HR students who not only do real time staffing solutions to its clients but also conducts Training Programme to UG colleges and other corporate houses. The LLP is also into Content Writing and organizing Industry tour for UG Colleges.
Other than the University requirement of two projects during their course, the students are also assigned with Team and Individual Innovative Assignments which are practical in nature. They are stimulated to transfer the theory learnt in class to the peers in engineering department by conducting Training programmes on Placement. "Our students are effectively utilized by the in-house companies for pricing, positioning and marketing their products which have in turn contributed to their individual development," adds Dr. Vishal.
