Role of Industry in Education System
Today the fresh graduates are facing two kinds of problems. Those who are getting placed are not aware of the work environment and find it very difficult to settle down. At the same time, there are others who are finding it hard to get a job. A search for the reasons behind these problems leads us to many factors ranging from the educational level to professional level. All the aspects need a thorough visit to get to the root of the problem. Students are looking up to the educational institutions and the colleges are looking up to the regulatory bodies for a ray of hope.
Watering the Roots
The fundamental change required is a revisit of the incumbent curricula. The regulatory bodies like AICTE need to make the curricula miscible with the demands of the industry. Is not the sole purpose of a degree to be able to work for the industry? Even then, the unconventional methods of teaching and the lackadaisical approach towards the application of theoretical knowledge are taking the students on a drab ride of fewer prospects. What is sadder than the situation itself is that there are things which can be done to mitigate this predicament, but are not being acted upon. The regulatory bodies and the educational institutions should look for ways to involve the industry in their operations. The courses can be designed after consulting a few prominent members of the industry. There are few colleges which have members, with many years of industrial experience, on their board to give valuable suggestions.
Although there are many online courses which provide enough freedom to the students to select from, but still they cannot match the exposure which the students get through regular courses at the campus. It helps in learning skills of a team player. The fresh graduates today are also running for the big names. If there is not a serious job security issue, then they should opt for the small firms and startups because at these firms they will have a closer look at the various business processes.
Rise to the Occasion
Now when we know that a lot needs to be done at basic level, we are committing the mistake of laying back and doing nothing. Even with the current infrastructure, we can take some smart steps to get a completely new set of results. Industry has to play a big role for this to happen. Awareness camps and workshops should be organized by the corporate people to allow the students to get a feel of the industry. These workshops should be organized all through the year and not just before the placement season. All students should be invited to such workshops, starting from sophomores to the final year students. Also, the colleges should invite veterans of the industry to be visiting faculty or mentors.
Advice to Students
After all said and done, it is the students who have to walk that extra mile for everything to bear fruits. Although the craving to know the industry should creep into the minds of students right from the second year, but in particular it is the final year students who have to do some serious preparations. Starting from having the right attitude of learning and being a team player, there are several other things which a student needs to do before attending the placement drives. Students should research about their field at various portals like NASSCOM and they should talk to their seniors who are working in the same field to know what jobs they should apply for and what skills they should focus on. Those who are working in the industry should share their experiences like 'first day at work' describing the problems they faced and what they learned. It will give a clearer idea than the job descriptions and the fresh graduates will feel more confident after working on those elements. There is a need for the applicants to work on their resumes, making it more precise and less ambiguous. Students should also be familiar with the beneficial aspects of social media to build important contacts of the people in the industry. It is all about being well equipped with skills and grabbing the opportunity.
