RMK Engineering College: An Account of Academic Excellence
Every year, approximately one million students are coming out from a staggering number of 3400 engineering colleges in India, which is more than the combined total number of engineering graduates that the U.S. and China are producing yearly. On the receiving end, job providers are struggling to fill their vacant stack of positions even with this luxury of fresh talent. It may look like a contradiction, but it is true, as a lion's share of this one-million students are not really equipped with the provisional engineering certificate or the requisite skills.
While, the country is continuing its process of making best and worst technical talent pool on the same factories, RMK Engineering College, has a different anecdote in terms of academic excellence. Located at Tiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu and affiliated to Anna University, Chennai, more than 95 percent of the enrolled students in the 2012-13 batches from RMK, were successfully placed from this campus and the same batch had an astonishing number of 124 university rank holders from the various departments. However, for the management of RMK Engineering College, this result is not a fortuitous lottery as it is a routine since last 15 years. "Instead of spoon-feeding the syllabus to the student, we instill the principles of engineering studies within the student to create better outputs," says R.M. Kishore, Vice Chairman, RMK Group of institutions.
During the long run in the education sector, the management of RMK Engineering College has created an excellent academic coordination methodology by understanding the weak parts of regular university curriculum. As per the teaching and learning method, each of the departments focus on continuous assessment of students throughout the semester and year through internal tests, assignments, model tests and several other academic related activities. They also organize Guest Lectures by experts from the industry and academia to address the students on the subjects to supplement the curriculum and create awareness on the recent trends in the respective subject.
Even though many colleges have adapted a similar pedagogy to encourage the academic excellence, most of them fall short due to the lack of student's participation in these programs. RMK Engineering College makes a difference here. Each of their departments tracks the performance of students during these supplementary sessions to identify the weaker ones. Students who fail or do not perform well in the tests or any such academic activities are counseled individually and the information is conveyed to the parents through concerned authority of the college. Involving the parents in their ward's education helped the college to achieve the reputation of producing an excellent academic result every year along with a satisfaction showing the right value of education to many young minds. "Our teachers frequently get in touch with parents, not only to inform them about their ward's performance inside the campus but also to ask them about their kid's fields of interests," says Kishore.
Supporting the Career Ladder
The emphasis on academic excellence not only benefited the college in gaining reputation but also helped the students to hurdle the cut-off marks barrier and continue to the further levels of many placement drives. Along with that the college provides adequate training for students to face any of the cumbersome interview process from the first year itself. From motivation sessions by reputed counselors to 45 hours Communication Skills Business English Certification by Cambridge ESOL India Ltd and Infosys Campus Connect Training are regular activities in academic calendar of this campus. Consequently, its make the students capable of surpassing the expectations of the recruiters and bringing to the table diverse skill sets that make them an asset to any organization they choose to join. With more than 95 percentages of placements, more than 200 companies visit every year in the institute for recruiting future talents. Accenture, Cognizant, Cypress Semiconductor Technology India, Cisco, Citrix India, Dell, Ericsson, Flipkart, HCL, HP, Hitachi, IBM, Infosys, L&T, Oracle, Samsung, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Apollo Tyres and Honey Well are few among them to list out.
Apart from career focused learning methods, the recipient of 'Clean and Green' award from Rotary Club stress effectively on Research and industry collaborations. In the 60 acres of lush green campus with ample facilities of ultra-modern learning, the management has set up seven research centers headed by prominent scientists. At present, research activities of about two crores of external funding are in progress in these innovations hubs. Along with that, the college has tied up with most of the big-guns in the industry like TCS, Infosys, IBM, Wipro and Cisco for the betterment of students as well as professors. With such continues efforts, in 2012, AICTE - CII survey listed RMK Engineering College one of the top 20 colleges for Industry collaborations.
Many more appreciation yet to receive, RMK Engineering College has already created a great platform, which is capable of strengthening any students to face the reality of life. "We are not trying to produce just a bunch of engineers with employability skills. With all the support of my team, we are marching towards making responsible, truthful and fruitful citizens who can take India to the next level," concludes Kishore, the youngest administrant of RMK Group of Institutions who believes that the future of the country lies in the young generation.
RMK Group of Educational Institutions
RMK Engineering College opened in 1995 with three departments. In a short span of time, the institute achieved a good reputation among students of Tamil Nadu as well as neighborhood states. The growing demand students pressurized the management to start one more institution with a promise of delivering the same quality. In 2001, the management started RMD Engineering College to fulfill the dreams many more engineering aspirants. While both colleges have been on the forefront to provide the students with practical, relevant and applied education, by implementing its successful educational approach in the campuses, the management added one more quality technical institution called RMK College of Engineering and Technology to this list in 2008. At present, the group has many educational institutes that include three engineering colleges, two schools and one polytechnic college.
