Research - the Final Frontier
Every student has had teachers who have taught the toughest subjects and made the discipline fun and effortless for the students. These professors are at times able to inspire students to become a professor or researcher in their fields of choice. One such student was Manav who at present is completing his doctoral studies in the U.S. and apart from filing two patents, has published few research papers. Although Manav, during his stay at IIITM, Gwalior, wanted to get a good paying job (which he secured), his Professor felt that he was more inclined towards research. The professor was none other than Prof. Anupam Shukla who apart from being a senior faculty member at IIITM, Gwalior was his guide and mentor.
\"Teaching is my passion, it is not just a job for me,\" says Prof Shukla, who due to this very reason, has dropped a variety of opportunities given to him by the companies in the private and public sector. Prof. Shukla who in 1988 became a teacher by joining a private engineering college started to do research work in his area of interest. This interest was further fueled as he was selected by the Public Service Commission for completing its projects. Due to his fascination with research, Prof. Shukla has been constantly changing and upgrading his research topics from image processing to android, robotics and a variety of other topics. The increase in interest helped him start a lot of departments such as IT, Computer Science, Bio-Medical, Bio-Technology and many others in a variety of government and private run institutions. \"I have also started research centers in Robotics, bio-informatics and other areas as I would like the future researchers to have the necessary facilities available to them in order to conduct their research,\" says Prof. Shukla with pride.
The Problems and Solutions
While the professor loves to pursue his interest of research along with his students who are also inclined towards the same he also found out that only 25 percent of the students were inclined towards research. However, that did not deter Prof. Shukla who felt that students should understand the importance and fun in doing research. Therefore depending on their interests\' the professor presents his students with research topics which help them become more aware of their openness towards research.
\"In this present day and age, majority of students always try to find shortcuts to their success and are very impatient to achieve goals,\" says Prof. Shukla. As part of a solution for this problem, he guides his students to understand and gain the in depth knowledge of the subject. This allows them to understand the importance of the overarching picture and as a result gives them patience.
To the Students
\"It is very important to assess and know your strengths and weaknesses before opting for a career,\" says Prof. Shukla. He points out that if a student is not able to master mathematics in 17 years, he or she shouldn\'t join the engineering stream with the hope of mastering it in four years. While guiding students towards research brings him great joy, he aims to prepare the students to have in depth knowledge on a variety of topics instead of focusing on a single one.
Prof. Anupam Shukla
After completing his Bachelor\'s degree in Engineering, he joined a private engineering institution as a faculty member. After working with a few other engineering institutions both private and government, he decided to join IIITM, Gwalior and has since been with them. Teaching is a passion for him and researching various fields such as Bio-informatics, Robotics and other fields brings him great joy. He has authored 3 books, published 150 research papers, worked on 10 sponsored projects from the central government and has filed 2 patents.
