Sudarshan Raju. M, Secretary, MS Engineering College
Enriching Research and Entrepreneurship:
Developing a disability can be a tremendous challenge as an adult as it hinders the individuals ability to function as before the critical incident. Numerous studies indicate that physical diseases and disabilities can cause depression persistent feelings of sadness, worthlessness or hopelessness. Physical symptoms range from fatigue, pain with no apparent cause, loss of appetite, even digestive problems to tendencies to commit suicide. Often it is hard to detect depression, as in most cases the individual suppresses the symptoms or is largely unaware of them.
What if there was a device that could analyze and understand a person\'s brain waves?
The applications of such a device could be endless. The device could enable doctors to understand and treat patients with such disorders, and help patients understand their behavior and make conscious changes amongst many more. With these thoughts in mind, Dr. Cyril Prasanna Raj, Dean of the Research and Development department at MS Engineering College and his team consisting of faculty members and researchers began the project on the Real-time Human Brain Computer Interface. Using the latest technology advancements, the research team successfully captured brain waves and began to understand the thought process of the disabled people. The team also took a huge leap forward and has started to test a variety of scenarios which provide a variety of opportunities to the physically disabled people to excel. We realized that there is a huge potential in researching medical applications where a lot of engineering tools and concepts could be utilized and thus were successful in this project, says Dr. Cyril.
It can be seen that faculty members who are always excited to participate in research work are pursuing a variety of other research projects in the areas of Underwater Sensor and Navigation, Biosensor for Prostate & Cervical Cancer and embedded systems for Future Smart Cities. As we began to believe that Research and Development is a true test of competence of the faculty, we realized that there is a need to encourage the faculty members to participate in research in order to expand their horizon in terms of knowledge, says Sudarshan Raju M, Secretary. In order to encourage continuous research activities by the faculty members, the institute has established five centers of excellence namely, Underwater Sensors and Navigation, Human Brain Computer Interface, Video Analytics, Smart Systems and Internet of Things (IoT) and Nano Electronics and Sensors. The institute has also signed over 20 MoUs with companies and is part of University Program supported by Cypress semiconductor, Xilinx Corporation, ARM, Texas Instruments, JK Batteries, and National Entrepreneurship Network who constantly fund and collaborate in order to start or continue the ground breaking research projects.
A Platform to Become Entrepreneurs
Understanding the importance of research and learning to take risks has provided the students and the faculty the urge to take the Entrepreneurial leap. Our students are on the path to become entrepreneurs and it is due to the strong faculty members we possess who aren\'t afraid to take risks and pursue research activities, says Raju. However, in order for this process to take place, the institute ensured and constantly ensures that all the projects that students have to complete for their course is original and not copied. By ensuring that the students are working hard and providing original ideas, we are providing them a platform to understand the unique products or services that they can create and become Entrepreneurs, says Dr. Cyril, who is part of MS Energen India Pvt Ltd. The institute which possesses 10 patents has setup various cells such as the Incubation, Entrepreneurship, Patent and Legal cells that guide the faculty and students to become patent holders or entrepreneurs.
Students and faculty members have developed Indias first VLSI design software based on open source platform and have trained more than 1000 members across India. The patent and copyright lies with MSEC, and the product is marketed through MS Energen India Pvt. Ltd., which supports MSEC students as incubates. MSEC has also developed Nanoelectronics device and circuits simulator and is commercialized through incubation. Thus the research theme at MSEC is Lab-Land says Sudarshan.
Due to the top quality research work that MSEC carries out which the industry has taken note of, has allowed the institute to achieve a 93 percent in placements, says Dr. Badarinarayan K. S. Apart from producing entrepreneurs, the institute hopes to increase its collaboration with foreign universities and also to commercialize 10 products year on year in the fields of agriculture, medical and smart city applications. The institute hopes to continue to inspire students to take the leap of faith with which the faculty members have taken to pursue a career in research.

Message from the Principal
The Engineers play an important role in improving the standard of living of the society. Future Engineers are given education, and molded at engineering institutions. I am happy that the Engineering students at MS Engineering College are privileged to have world class Education and ultra modern lab facilities, over all personality development with the support of Management and dedicated staff. I wish all the students a bright future at M S Engineering College.
