Koshys School and College Of Nursing: Fulfilling the Demands of the Nursing Industry through Affirmed Nursing Courses
Prof. Sereena Shaji , Principal, Koshys School and College of Nursing
Acute shortage of qualified nurses is becoming a problem for hospitals and healthcare centers. The hospital emergency divisions and various care units stay flooded with patients requiring on time health checks. It becomes a soaring task for the nurses to look after every requirement. This is due to the deficit of 2 million nurses across the country (as suggested in a recent study done by Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy). Portraying solution to this situation is Koshys School and College of Nursing (KSCN). Started in 2003 in Bengaluru, Karnataka to design the mindset of the nursing students with care, compassion and competence for the patients, KSCN is helping the healthcare industry by providing skilled nurses. It is a formidable nursing college that highlights students' learning curve with faultless practical skills and indomitable theoretical knowledge. These students become passionate professionals, build strong and healthy communities.
"KSCN Gives Students Clinical Training Where The Teachers Demonstrate, Train And Supervise The Students In Laboratories Followed By Hands On Experience In Hospitals And Communities"
Specialty Of The Nursing Programs
KSCN has taken up the challenge to fill whatever gap that resides between theory and practical learning. At the commencement of the nursing courses, KSCN attunes the students with non-corruptive professional approach. Then the students start learning world class healthcare courses and exemplify the highest ethical factors at exams and at practices. For this purpose, KSCN administration selects teachers with great care. They hire teachers who have enormous industry experience to make sure hospital based nursing education happens at an apex level. The teachers put the students in situations where they perform with clinical precession throughout the academic years by following a curriculum which is affiliated to RGUHS (Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences) for B.Sc. M.Sc. and PB B.Sc. (Post Basic Bachelor of Science) nursing courses and KSDNEB (Karnataka State Diploma in Nursing Examination Board) for GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) program.
In the curriculum, KSCN has fixed slots for a six month internship program to ensure that students come out with familiarity to different challenges pertaining to the healthcare industry. By doing this, they make sure that the students have enough stage exposure before joining the industry. Cumulating this fascinating learning experience, KSCN has charming classrooms with all modern-day facilities like projector-based learning and PowerPoint presentation based teaching. "For accumulating students' practical competency, KSCN have laboratories equipped with state of the art tools. In addition to classroom teaching, KSCN gives students clinical training where the teachers demonstrate, train and supervise the students in laboratories followed by hands on experience in hospitals and communities. Koshys Hospital being the parent hospital, take lead role in imparting practical learning exposure to our nursing students. They hold clinical discussions in hospital setting.
There is a spacious auditorium where we conduct seminars for updating the teachers and students on the latest nursing practices. And our campus is located at a seven-acre land that creates a beautiful amphitheatre for co curricular activities, sports like basketball and football. The students get enough opportunities for competitive sports and cultural activities. We have accommodation facilities in hostel with two and four sharing rooms. There are food outlets and cafeteria running in the campus giving students ample comfort for living." says Sereena Shaji, Principal, KSCN.
A Range of Researches Conducted
"In 3rd and 4th year, the students take up research projects based on the demands of the society and the hospital. Alongside, postgraduate students also perform research activities. Some of the recent researches they have completed are on topics like 'Needle-stick' injuries and hospital-associated infections. Six of our UG Research projects were given university grants for the academic year 2018-19. Another benefit of learning at KSCN is exposure to national and international workshops conducted at institution itself. We conducted a national workshop in 2018 on 'PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE' and in 2019 an international workshop on 'TRANSFORMING QUALITY THROUGH PATIENT SAFETY' which resulted into students' performing exuberantly in recent time," explicates Sereena. Taking strides for faculty development, KSCN has introduced Faculty Development Program based on the current developments happening in the nursing industry.
As KSCN's stringent curriculum with regular learning activities prepare the students for holistic nursing careers, their pre-placement activity guides the students towards lucrative career choices. The placement and training division has set soft skills training, attitude development, communication enhancement and mock interviews for placement purposes. Major hospitals like Columbia Asia Hospital, Manipal Hospital and Cyte care Hospitals and Koshys Hospital are some of the main recruiters that visit the college campus every year. As the college takes such gear changing steps for students' welfare, the students, in turn, make the college's name shine dynamically in intra collegiate, zonal and state level platforms as a part of Karnataka State Branch Student Association, where the students have won many prizes in many co-curriculum events.
"Believe it or not, we had 14 ranks at 2018 RGUHS BSc(N) examination. As per the demands of the healthcare society, we give the students exposure to charity and corporate hospitals. They stay well aware about the quality of care they need to exhibit for patients' safety and satisfaction. We train the students to come out into the nursing care with well sowed compassion and caring attitude coupled with competence," states Sereena. KSCN maintains good faculty-student ratio with role model teachers and zealous learners. It is a learning center imbibed with fun and energy. Today, the college is planning to involve CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activities for making the students more responsible. Because KSCN has its hospital  Koshys Hospital, it is able to give students insights on everyday hustle and bustle regarding nursing profession.
