India has seen a rapid expansion in the higher education sector since 2001. There has been a dramatic rise in the number of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and the enrolment has increased by multiple folds. Today, Indian higher education system is one of the largest in the world, with more than 50,000 institutions pan-India. With the increasing numbers, the focus of most institutes is shifting from providing quality education to offering education to a large number of students. Adding to this, the quality of curriculum is also getting compromised year on year. Set up in 1991, Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies (KIAMS) is overcoming this notion by imparting quality and contemporary education to the students which aims to make them industry-ready.

Established in Harihar, Karnataka by the Kirloskar Group, KIAMS was set up to put its illustrious leader Mr. Shantanurao Laxmanrao Kirloskar's thoughts to practice. Encouraged by the success of its alumni in the industry, Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies opened its second campus in Pune in 2010. Both - Harihar and Pune campus are residential campuses which are equipped to offer two-year full time Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) program, duly approved by AICTE, Ministry of Education, Govt. of India.

“Kirloskar institute of advanced management studies only takes a limited number of students per intake, the focus of the institute is on offering personalized attention to each and every one of its students”

"Today, there are numerous institutions across India which are just providing courses for the sake of it, but we at Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies are a notch ahead of the rest. We are different from these kinds of institutions as we are not operating with a revenue mindset. Being the only institute in India that is directly backed by a business organization and carries the brand and the logo, even after 30 years of operations, we still take 180 students and believe that education is not about competing; rather it is about collaborating. Being supported by Kirloskar, it also allows us to be always on top of our technology and innovation game. This helps us to stay ahead of the curve and offer industry-oriented education to our students. Our industrial connection also enables us to understand the changing requirements and the new trends of the industry while allowing us to prepare our students accordingly. We are up-dated about the segments in the manufacturing sector that are having a man crunch and accordingly we nurture professionals that can fit perfectly into that industry. We also have a great industry-institute connect that allows us to offer con-temporary education to our students", highlights Dr. Biplab Kumar Biswal, Director, Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies.

“One of the major advantages of studying at kiams is that being backed by a large conglomerate, every year 20 percent of kiams students get placed within the kirloskar group itself”

Thriving on Industry Connections

Since Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies only takes a limited number of students per intake, the focus of the institute is on offering personalized attention to each and every one of its students. This approach allows them to reach their true potential. The PGDM course offered at KIAMS is a two year full-time residential Post Graduate Program in Management, spread over six trimesters. The entire program is designed and developed in such a way that it prepares a student more industry ready with a blend of knowledge, skills and attitude.

One can observe that courses taught at KIAMS and the faculty who teaches it, are influenced by the corporate. Most of the top executives from the Kirloskar group are part of KIAMS faculty. The industry-institute connect also allows KIAMS to make changes to its course structure or syllabus and make its students up to date with the latest changes happening in the industry. Apart from this, the institute's big data analytics course is being taught by the Head of IBM analytics, IOT is being taught by a Senior Consultant from EY and Supply Chain Logistics by the head of American Beverages in India to name a few. This also gives our students exclusive placement opportunities as well and this has happened in the past. The institute also has an impressive placement track record and even during the pandemic, all its students have been placed in top firms.

Dr. Biplab Kumar Biswal says, "We have six trimesters and in between the third and fourth trimester, the students go for a three-month business immersion program. We also make sure that we assist our students to choose the specializations that will suit them the most. This helps our students to get into career paths that they can excel in. We also have a mentor mentee system, where every mentor will have six to seven students to help. This helps our students to build a meaningful relation-ship with their mentors as well. The students get to attend paid business immersion programs and this shows how much value businesses are putting in our students. Adding to this, all our courses are autonomous courses and the faculty can make relevant changes into the syllabus easily based on the evolutions in the industry. This allows us to align our course according to the needs and changing trends in the industry."

Adding to this, one of the major ad-vantages of studying at KIAMS is that being backed by a large conglomerate, every year 20 percent of KIAMS students get placed within the Kirloskar group itself. The institute has an alumni base of 3000 people spread across the globe and these people are working with top organizations across the globe. KIAMS' alumni also constantly visit the campus and ensure that the students are exposed to the latest changes occurring within the industry.

Marching Ahead with Future-Ready Approach

Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies takes entrepreneurship very seriously. KIAMS has a dedicated entrepreneurship cell and has already incubated two companies. The institute also hold tie-ups with Wadhwani Foundation to promote the culture of entrepreneurship within its campus. These tie-ups with the Indian institute of e-commerce help students in understanding how to develop and sell products online as well as how to collaborate with big e-commerce plat-forms.

Adding to the above, KIAMS has considered the recent advancements in the industry and Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies, Pune has set up SUMAN - (Sustainable Universal Manufacturing Augmented Node) - Center of excellence for Disruptive Innovation and the Industry 4.0 lab. An Industry 4.0 centric lab, it is set up in association with the C4i4 lab which is one of the four centres set up under the Samarth Udyog Initiative by the Department of Heavy Industries, Government of India.

SUMAN allows students and faculty to work on live industrial projects in areas of disruptive innovation and also holds awareness workshops for industry professionals and faculty members. SUMAN - (Sustainable Universal Manufacturing Augmented Node) - Center of excellence for disruptive innovation is also engaged in promoting Industry 4.0 lab and Incubation centre along with providing training and consulting in areas of technology disruption, Digital transformation and is working on getting International collab-orations in areas of disruptive innovation.
