Established with a vision to be an Institution of Excellence in Engineering education, Innovation and Research and working towards evolving great leaders for the country's future and meeting global needs is Jyothy Institute of Technology, an institution started by a philanthropist Late Dr. B N V Subrahmanya. Starting its operations in 2011, Jyothy Institute of Technology has the primary objective of helping middle and lower-middle-class people by offering moderate fees and scholarships for the meritorious and needy in society. The secondary objective of the institution includes building an institution of excellence in innovation and product revolution. Jyothy Institute of Technology is on the path of product development and is inculcating entrepreneurial attitude in the minds of students through student incubations for product development and promotion.

Keeping up with its inception ideology, Jyothy Institute of Technology offers carefully curated courses which includes four of the UG programmes which are accredited by NBA, including Computer Science and Engineering, Information Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering in under Graduation and Food Technology, Product Design & Manufacturing and Computer Science & Engineering in Post Graduate degree. The uniqueness lies in the way the programmes are chosen and being run. The students of circuit branches are allowed to work for 24 X 7 using workstations on live projects and get an insight into R&D. Many of them have been working on DNA analysis, Gene Therapy and Bio-Medical applications. The Mechanical Engineering students and Product Design and Manufacturing students can use the 3-D printing lab to develop prototypes and products. Food Technology courses offered by JIT is in itself a unique programme in terms of offering internships to students in the start-ups on campus.

Beyond the Average

Jyothy Institute of Technology is different from other contemporary institutions. JIT has found white space in the engineering academia and has been working hard to fill the identified white spaces. The institution has established an exclusive and exquisite R&D center, Centre for Incubation, Innovation, Research and Consultancy (CIIRC), a section 8 non-profit organization, with an expenditure of more than Rs. 25 crores, spanning 15000 sq. feet area where 40 plus doctorates are working. Many of them have won fellowships from reputed national and international institutions which is the hallmark of quality. The R&D centre has more than Rs. 10 crores worth of live projects funded by various state, national and international agencies, Viz., Karnataka Council for Technology Upgradation, DRDO, DBT, DST, CEFIPRA and so on. With concerted efforts from doctoral scholars working for the R&D from the past two years, Jyothy Institute of Technology was able to convince the NITIAayog and has bagged the prestigious Atal Incubation Centre, a part of Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) with a funding of more than Rs. 10 Crores. JIT was also the only academic institution to get the AIC funding in the first phase of allocation in the year 2018-19. The center has already incubated more than 15 start-ups from the past six months in the vistas of Food technology, Sensors & Devices and Materials.

Jyothy Institute of Technology offers Green Campus with the adoption of green initiatives such as 300 KVA rooftop solar power plant, Biodiesel processing center with a capacity of 100 liters per day where biodiesel is processed from waste cooking oil. As a new initiative, the center is processing biodiesel from waste silk cocoon and dairy scum. JIT has established a special instrumentation facility that has SEM, EDAX, TGA, UV Spec, gas and liquid GC and various other R&D instrumentation. JIT has also put up a Primary Health Centre, Auditorium, Outdoor GYM, Swimming Pool, separate Hostel for boys and girls and all other general infrastructure as per AICTE norms.

JIT has high value for chalk and talk in class. The faculty use overhead projectors, Wacom devices and conduct quizzes, extempore classes, foreign language classes, video learning modules, e-learning resources and various other methods to keep the students grooved to the lecture.

The faculties at JIT are constantly encouraged to upgrade their technical knowledge/skills by sponsoring their industrial training and providing support for doctoral studies. Also, the institution has subscribed to VTU consortium where faculty have access to journals of Elsevier, Springer and others. "Our faculty have been kept abreast of the latest developments in the education sector through regular staff meetings, display of information on the website and percolation of information through email. Recently, faculty were enlightened about the NIRF ranking, ARIIA and forthcoming new education policy in the department meetings. Faculty are sponsored to attend seminars, conferences, symposia and others to know about the latest technological developments. The institution also funds faculty to publish articles in reputed Scopus indexed journals," speaks Dr. K. Gopalakrishna, Principal, Jyothy Institute of Technology.

A Window of Opportunities

JIT has many academic, industrial, national and international collaborations to its credit. The students are trained in the 6th and 7th semesters to upgrade their aptitude and technical skills. The placement is outsourced to a company where the placement coordinator would coordinate training and placements jointly with the company. The soft skills would be imparted to all students in year one and two.

Dr. K. Gopalakrishna shares, "Today, education is mostly restricted to bookish knowledge and less of hands-on experience. This has created a huge gap between Industry and Academia. The industry is talking about the employability crisis rather than an employment crisis because the students do not get hands-on exposure to the present-day technologies relevant to the industry verticals. Jyothy Institute of Technology has the solution to all pain points listed above. We have established a state of the art R&D innovation labs where product development is the priority. At JIT, our students are encouraged to establish their own campus start-ups. This keeps them floating in terms of relevance to current technologies of the industry and also helps them in increasing the employability coefficient of each student."

All skilled students at Jyothy Institute of Technology are given opportunities to hone their skills by offering training in different domains such as Aero Modelling, Electric Vehicle Design and Development, Robotic Club and more. The students are trained in the R&D center in Aero Modelling and the team has been participating in SAE Aero competition since 2017. JIT team stood 5th overall in the last edition of the SAE AERO micro class student competition at USA. Students of JIT have also been participating in the ECO KART competition held at Gautam Buddha University since 2018. They bagged the best-rugged vehicle award in the last edition of the competition. JIT also encourages students to participate in sports and games for all-round development. The institution also hosts few university games on campus. Recently, JIT bagged the winner's title of the Bengaluru South Zone VTU Throw Ball Tournament. It also won the third place in the VTU Inter-Zone competition again conducted by JIT on its campus. Few of our students have represented our institution in international events such as throw ball championships at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, UN Model at Indonesia, member of national swimming squad and others.

Students were also given many entrepreneurship sessions to inculcate entrepreneurial skill sets. Ideathon, Gameathon, Hackathons and investors pitch were conducted at the institution for 360-degree support to students. For students who wish to study abroad, the overseas education help desk has been set up at the institute and awareness programmes have been conducted through the help desk.

Mentoring without Limitations

The roadmap for the next five years for Jyothy Institute of Technology has been brainstormed and laid. JIT intends to get NAAC accreditation, ARIIA qualification, to figure in less than 100 ranking in NIRF and pitch for Autonomy. Further, the institution would go for Deemed University status which would help JIT leapfrog into the league of top-notch institutions of our nation.

With a mission to provide a vibrant, intellectually and emotionally rich teaching-learning environment with the State of the Art Infrastructure and recognizing and nurturing the potential of each individual to evolve into ones' own self and contribute to the welfare of all, JIT has adopted a nearby village for development. It has been supplying water to the village from a bore well on its campus. It also has supported the village panchayat by donating a garbage truck. JIT is a nodal center for Unnat Bharat Abhiyaan. It is also participating in Digital India Mission, Ek Bharat, Shresta Bharat and so on.

JIT also offers the best outgoing student awards programme wise every year. The best of the best from all departments will be awarded a gold ring and all others get a silver ring. JIT also conducts annual Alumni meet. The alumni association is a registered body. The office-bearers of the alumni club have been given an office to operate from campus with personal card and letterhead. Apart from JIT, Jyothy Group is also running a school 'Jyothy Kendriya Vidyalaya' from LKG to 12th since 1989 and also is opening its commerce college 'Jyothy Institute of Commerce and Management' for B.Com and B.B.A aspirants in the year 2020.
