Interview with Topper
I Played sports to Catch a Good Sleep the Day before JEE
Prudhvitej Immadi was the first rank holder of JEE 2011. He is currently pursuing Electrical Engineering in IIT- Bombay. He talks of his experience as a JEE topper and about his life as an IITian with HER Magazine.
Q. Being a first rank holder, you had the freedom to choose any stream at any college. What motivated you to choose Electrical Engineering in IIT-Bombay?
Every department in engineering is too vast to get a simple idea of what you are going to work on. I have not had good awareness about EE or any other branch in engineering before making that decision. Taking EE was the best thing that could happen to me. EE here in IITB gives me so much flexibility that I can now choose to go to work on niche Nano devices or the very happening Internet of Things or improving the Power Systems in our own back yard. This was also the kind of review I received from the seniors and I had an obvious choice.
Q. How did you achieve the first position in this tough competitive exam? What is the secret of your success?
We were a batch of 30 students at my coaching center who were preparing for JEE for the past 2 years. There are many reasons behind me coming at the top. Prime factor is the concentration, which I had during the study hours. You need to work smart to be the best. We utilized the time perfectly. We did not study very late but utilized the time perfectly. We played sports, watched movies, went out and had all sorts of fun too but we were smart about out study patterns. Finally, there are those invaluable blessings from parents, teachers and everyone else.
Q. What was your study pattern while preparing for JEE and can you recollect the day before JEE exam?
I allocated 4 hours a subject every day, which comprises of 1-2 hours for reading and 2-3 hours for practicing. In the initial phases, learning part is emphasized and more practice is done during the revision phase. There were many group discussions among peers and with teachers. The coaching I had been given was very interactive overall and that was the best part of it. There was healthy competition among the peer group and that made it challenging to perform well in the weekly test. On the day before JEE, there was not much left to study. I played for sometime so that I could get catch good sleep that night and meditated for some time.
Q. Are you enjoying the tag of being an IITian?
There is a fairytale picture of life of an IITian in the minds of usual aspirants, which is not true. We change a lot after coming into the University. We make friends from various places, backgrounds and all that gives a better perspective of life. Being an IITian opens you to a plethora of opportunities. I had some unique experiences like going on a Mountaineering Course for a month, going on a semester exchange to Singapore where I made friends from different countries and working in Samsung Electronics, Korea as an intern. Yes, I enjoy being an IITian than topper of some examination.
Q. What is your message to the teenagers who are desperate to clear the Joint entrances and join IIT?
There are no shortcuts to success. Only hard work pays. However, life is unfair and sometimes there will not be any good results. It is very important how smartly you outplay the unfair game of life. Procrastination never helps, so never delay anything. Last but not the least “Be disciplined.” Do not consider JEE preparation as a burden, consider it as your dream and you will achieve. Take no pressure from anyone. Consider every pressure situation to be a positive learning experience.
