Innovative Pedagogy: Rajeev Gandhi Memorial College of Engineering and Technology:
Succeeding through Rigorous Training and Practical Exposure
Growing from an annual student intake of 220 to over 1400 students within a span of 20 years is a laudable achievement, especially when taking into account that the engineering college is operating from a remote location. Rajeev Gandhi Memorial College of Engineering and Technology (RGMCET), established in 1995 with 32.04 acres and Located 300kms away from Hyderabad in a place called Nandyal in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh, has achieved that feat. The institute is offering6 UG engineering, 7 PG engineering, MBA and MCA programs apart from and PhD program. The Institute established with a Moto of Education for Peace by its Chairman who is none other than Dr. M. Santhiramudu, who is Auditor by Profession and established institutions from KG to PG in Drought ridden, Fraction Zone of rayalaseema region. The institute has built its reputation by providing a practical oriented technical education that can match up with the standards of any premier technical institute in the country. While a regular engineering semester has six theory and two practical subjects, at RGMCET, a student has to go through seven theory and three practical sessions. "Our focus is to maximize the practical exposure of students. As we have added one subject each in theory and practical sessions, from second year onwards, our studentscan study six additional practical subjects in the duration of their course here," explains Dr. T. Jayachandra Prasad, Principal, RGMCET.
Helping the institute to bring such rigorous curriculum is the autonomous status that they have been utilizing extensively since 2010 to produce graduates with innovative ideas who can add value to the organization that they work for. With support of more than 320 highly qualified faculty members where nearly 50 faculty members are PhD holders, RGMCET prepare students for industry, higher education and research by providing strong fundamentals in technical education. The academic brilliance of RGMCET students is evident from the last 16 Batches of students who have graduated with scores averaging 85 to 90 percent. While the institute has already achieved 11 gold medals from the university, the management has initiated several incentive plans to stimulate academic abilities of students and faculty members. Noteworthy among them is reimbursement of complete tuition and hostel fees for those students who score 90 percent and above in an academic year. Since the commencement of this scheme, the competition to secure the scholarship has been on the rise and last year almost 20 students succeeded in securing the scholarship.
"Equipping students with the fundamentals is imperative in any education system. However, in the ever changing industrial scenario, we have to compliment the theatrical concepts with much needed industry oriented skills. Here, we are trying to bring them together," says Dr. Prasad. As a part of industrial institute interaction, RGMCET students are exposed to the actual work environment of various industries. The institute offer hands-on training to the student both on the conventional as well as in advanced techniques.A well organized Placement Cell is functioning in the institution with a fulltime dedicated Placement Officer, who continuously monitors the employment potential and arranges the campus interview for the students.
Despite being away from the major industries due the obscurity of location the institute has been operating from, they have managed to place 80 percent of the eligible students every year. The Placement Office maintains a consistent communication with the leading companies nationwide, which conduct campus interviews and select graduate and post-graduate students from all disciplines. To improve the placements further, the cell arranges a good number of training programs right from the first year to final year with the help of reputed private organizations. Seventhsence Bangalore, Learning curve, Hyderabad, AenonOrion Infomatics, and Bangalore, Dare to win, New Delhi are few names from the list of organizations who are closely associated with RGMCET to provide students the necessary skills sets needed to sustain in the highly competitive economic scenarios.
However, RGMCET is not a place where only engineering students are benefited. As a social responsibility, the institute organizes number of job oriented skilled programs for the youths of nearby localities and helps them improve their economic conditions. RGMCET is the only engineering college in Andhra Pradesh – Telengana region to provide vocational training under the scheme DDU-KAUSHAL (Deen Dayal Upadhyay Centres for Knowledge Acquisition and upgradation of Skilled Human Abilities and Livelihood) proposed by UGC. "Our major mission and purpose is to build a world class undergraduate program with all required infrastructure that provides strong theoretical knowledge supplemented by the state of art skills. Here, we want to help not only the student who come from all over the state in search of a better technical education but also uplift the nearby communities by providing the necessary skill trainings. We are on our way to establish this institute as a center where people from different social strata can be benefited," says Dr. Prasad. To be precise, RGMCET is a road to an elegant educational journey, yet path breaking in different dimensions.
