Prof. Dr. Barbara Lier, Head Of The International Business School (Cologne) And Hochschule Fresenius University Of Applied Sciences
With increasing investment in the education system in the past years and Germany’s growing search for researchers and skilled employees, the country is becoming more and more attractive for international students. Not only the solid and detail-oriented technical expertise but also the practical skills gained during studies in Germany help to enhance a career in Germany or internationally. Founded in 1848 by Carl Remigius Fresenius, and with its roots in the Fresenius Chemical Laboratory, Hochschule Fresenius, University of Applied Sciences looks back to a more than 170-year-old tradition in privately funded education in Germany. Being the oldest educational chemistry institute of its kind, Hochschule Fresenius University of Applied Sciences remains true to the intent of its founder, as it combines teaching, research, and practical application. On this basis, and in coordination with professional partners as well as in communication with associations, alumni and students, Hochschule Fresenius University of Applied Sciences has continuously evolved its range of courses and its strategic direction. In doing so, it pursues the goals of sustainability and innovation in equal measure, true to its motto: - ‘Teaching and research with practical relevance, bringing an international environment to life, challenging and supporting our students!’.
Offering a Thriving Environment to Students
In light of the requirements of a changing society, the university's activities are primarily oriented towards interdisciplinarity in teaching and research, the sensible use of digitization for the design of the courses offered in terms of content and procedures, a commitment to the internationality of target-group-oriented educational offerings, and flexibility in order to achieve the best possible individual educational biographies and learning progress for students. The name Fresenius stands for practically oriented teaching closely linked to applied research and development. This holds true for the long-standing Faculty of Chemistry & Biology, the Faculties of Health & Social Affairs and of Economics & Media, both established in 1997/98, the Faculty of Design, which was integrated in 2013 and the Faculty online plus for distance learning and virtual study programs, established in 2015. The university currently has nine campuses all over Germany plus a study center in New York City, USA. It provides students with the opportunity of studying in inner-city German locations in Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Wiesbaden and Hamburg and switch between campuses.
Hochschule Fresenius University of Applied Sciences focuses on a close teacher-student relation and has many service departments that are working on each student’s needs, such as the Career Development department, the Alumni and Corporate Relations department, the Competence Center International Services, the Competence Center Languages, and so on. “First of all, we offer a Studienkolleg (preparatory courses) for students who do not have a direct university entrance qualification for German universities. We also offer focus courses in economics (German and English), technical studies (German and English) and medical studies (German only).
“Since its foundation, hochschule fresenius had been growing steadily, both in terms of programs and student numbers”
After passing the university entrance exam (Feststellungsprüfung), Students are allowed to study a Bachelor’s program at Hochschule Fresenius or any other university in Germany. Our most popular Bachelor program in terms of student numbers is the Psychology Bachelor (B.Sc.) taught in German. We furthermore offer German programs in Media Studies, Mobility Management or Tourism, Hotel and Event Management,” states Prof. Dr. Barbara Lier, Head of the International Business School (Cologne), and Hochschule Fresenius University of Applied Sciences.
“We promise our Indian students to deliver them great education with a lot of focus on practice, including actual companies as much as possible through excursions, workshops, guest lectures or case studies and projects”
A Promising Study Abroad Destination
Since its foundation, Hochschule Fresenius had been growing steadily, both in terms of programs and student numbers. Hochschule Fresenius is the oldest and largest private university in Germany that offers classroom teaching for full-time students. The International Business School of Hochschule Fresenius University of Applied Sciences offers English-taught study programs that feature high demand from international students, who do not speak German. “We offer a Bachelor program in International Business Management (B.A.) with two integrated semesters abroad as well as a Master’s program in International Business Management (M.A.) with the possibility to earn a double degree and spend two semesters at the University of Chester, UK. Furthermore, we have some more specialized Master’s programs: International Tourism & Event Management (M.A.), Digital Management (M.A.) and International Health Economics & Pharmacoecconomics (M.Sc.). Last but not least, our latest study program features a very interesting combination of engineering and management: Industrial Engineering and International Management (M.Sc.)”, adds Prof. Dr. Barbara Lier.
To make learning as smooth as possible, the Hochschule Fresenius University of Applied Sciences provides each international student with a mentoring student called ‘buddy’ for the first semester. Apart from helping the new students to settle in their new city, explain to them how (student) life in Germany works, the buddies also help students to find their way around campus, assisting in organizational matters such as exam registration or important deadlines that new students may not be aware of from the beginning. “Particularly this semester, we have seen high demand of Indian students for our Master’s program in Industrial Engineering and International Management (M.Sc.). Also, our programs in International Business Management (M.A.) or International Tourism & Event Management (M.A.) often attract many Indian applicants. We promise our Indian students to deliver them great education with a lot of focus on practice, including actual companies as much as possible through excursions, workshops, guest lectures or case studies and projects. As a private university placing a large emphasis on a familiar atmosphere, we also promise you that we always will be approachable,” shares Prof. Dr. Barbara Lier.
