Entering the New Era of Accountability

 Sandeep Sen
The abysmal performance of Indian Universities in world rankings has led the HRD ministry to roll out an India-specific ranking framework covering higher educational institutes. It is evident that the world rankings are effectively downplaying the significance of Top Indian Universities such as IIT Kharagpur. The prestigious institution has a higher proportion of PhDs among its staff than any university in the BRICS countries despite which China had six of the top 10 places, followed by Brazil with two institutes and Russia and South Africa with one each.

The MHRD rankings will be focused on parameters such as teaching learning and resources, research, consulting and collaborative performance, graduation outcome, outreach and inclusivity (through reservations) and perception. It will be interesting to see which Private Universities make it to the top of the rankings beating some of the prestigious double and triple 'I' brands. The rankings will cover all institutes offering courses on engineering, law, management and humanities and the first ranking list is expected by January-February 2016. The ranks will be determined by a committee comprising of key HRD Ministry officials, Directors of IITs and NBA chairman amongst other officials. According to official statements, we are entering a new age of accountability. We sincerely hope that the newly established committee brings a sigh of relief for Universities across the country.

'Management College of the Year, 2015' is the focus of this issue of Higher Education Review, with an aim to identify institutions that are providing out of the box facilities to students. The institutes have been identified based on the parameters of Infrastructure, Faculty, Industry interaction, Innovative programs, research and placements by our team of experts consisting of top HR managers and Educationalists. Each institute has been given a special category that signifies its unique offering but does not limit it to that.
