Y. Patil, a veteran leader, had rightly foreseen this significance and impact of quality education in society, which made him lay the foundation for numerous educational institutions. Engaged in imparting the same in the field of pharmaceutical sciences is Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences & Research.
"The institute established in 1994 is now headed by our chairman, Dr. P. D. Patil and under his leadership; we have achieved an iconic status. Presently, we are offering B. Pharm, M. Pharm and PhD program and from this academic year we are starting with Pharm.D programme affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune," states Dr. Sohan Chitlange, Principal, Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences & Research (DYPIPR). As the name refers, DYPIPR is not just an institute imparting training; instead, the focus is equally laid on quality training and research.

The institute through its Research centre approved by SPPU, Pune and Industry Institute Partnership cell of the institute is continuously working towards development of scientific temperament, research culture and aptitude among its faculty and students and fostering academia-industry partnership through collaborative research and consultancy activities.
The institute has undertaken several research projects funded by AICTE, New Delhi. Through RPS (Research Promotion Scheme), the institute has completed research project on Development of Indigenous technology for production, isolation and purification of Urokinase by novel kidney cell lines. The institute has also upgraded the laboratory and instrumental facilities in various departments through MODROBS (Modernization of Department) and conducted technical seminars on Advanced Drug design and development: A medicinal chemistry approach "states Dr. Chitlange. The institute has also received research grants from BCUD, SPPU, Pune for undertaking research projects in key domains like Development of novel drug delivery systems like microspheres, solid lipid nanoparticulate systems and multiparticulate Digestive Enzyme formulation. Other areas of research work include Design, synthesis and pharmacological screening of novel heterocyclic compounds, Bioanalytical method development, Chromatographic fingerprinting of herbal and Conservation of Endangered medicinal plants by Tissue culture techniques.
The institute has research collaborations with various research and pharmaceutical industries like Haffkine Biopharmaceutical Cooperation Ltd, Pune, Wobble Bioresearch Ltd, Pune, Ari Healthcare Pvt Ltd, Pune and Nu Life Pharmaceuticals, Pune. DYPIPSR, through these collaborations are working on the thrust areas of Anti-venom screening of Natural products, Plant Tissue Culture, Development and Standardization of novel Ayurvedic formulations and Chromatographic (HPLC and HPTLC) method development and validation. The institute also regularly conducts guest sessions and workshop where resource speakers from renowned industries and research institutes interact with faculty and students and deliver talks in their areas of expertise. These activities help to create a platform for dissemination of ideas and current technological advancement in key areas in pharmaceutical research and development.
"We believe that graduates will be able to apply theoretical and practical skills only through blending the learning with a mix of classroom sessions, laboratories and team project experiences," says Dr. Chitlange. For every module, students are given practical sessions and most of the learning happens in the laboratory. Research also helps in the live demonstrations to the students. "Through these, we develop a confidence which help them in doing specialized research in the core and applied areas of pharmaceutical sciences. We train our students in handling all the advanced instruments in the pharmaceutical fields," adds Dr. Chitlange.
The institute has well designed spacious laboratories equipped with ultra-modern facilities for imparting updated education and training in various subjects of Pharmacy. A spacious instrumentation room is separately set up which houses many sophisticated analytical equipments. "Our laboratories are well planned as per the norms and standards of regulatory authorities of the country. We always try to maintain international standards in our training and infrastructural facilities," pinpoints Dr. Chitlange.
Based on student's interest about the career, effective career guidance is achieved by using mentoring services, where individual students are informed about different career options like Research and Development, Production, Marketing, Q.A., Q.C., academics, preclinical / clinical trials, medical writers and higher studies like M. Pharm, MBA, PG Diploma in clinical trials, M.S., UPSC/MPSC and so on. Institute even organizes industrial training for the students, which gives an idea to students about professional culture and various departments in industries and motivates to pursue their career in the industry.
The institute further conducts co-curricular and extra-curricular activities involving group discussions, debate competitions on technical subjects and current trends prepare the students to come out of their shell and develop their innate skills. "The graduates should understand the concept of community pharmacy, be able to participate in health care programs and should also act as a bridge between the Physician and Patients for achieving better health of community," concludes Dr. Chitlange.

He has done his Master's degree from University Department, Nagpur University, Nagpur & Doctoral degree from S. G. B. University, Amravati. He has around 18 years of Professional experience & has Published 80 research Paper in national & international reputed journals and has 3 books to his credit. He is an approved PG & Ph. D guide of Savitribai Phule Pune University. He is also actively associated with various professional bodies. Presently he is Associate Secretary, APTI (National), EC-member, Association of Unaided Private Pharmacy Colleges, Maharashtra and Member, board of studies, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Savitribai Phule Pune University.
