Focusing on Practical Knowledge with a Theoretical Background

Dhanalakshmi College has one vision:it is committed to provide highly disciplined, conscientious and enterprising professionals conforming to global standards through value based quality education and training.

The motto of Dhanalakshmi College of Engineering is Discipline, Character and Education. With these three tenets, the college which began in 2001has been working to producing students who are responsible and competent. The college is affiliated to Anna University and is also approved by the AICTE. The college provides six under graduate courses and two post graduate courses. One of the main focuses is to produce students who have a strong understanding of fundamental concepts and are able to apply those concepts in the practical sphere. This is based on the understanding that for employability today, one needs to have theoretical knowledge and practical application of that knowledge.

In the current competitive world, employability is one of the most important issues on every student's mind; the college has made significant efforts in this regard. The placement training process begins systematically from the first semester. Through the placement cell, the students are trained in both technical and soft skills by skilled and competent faculty members from the college.Experts from the industry are also brought in to provide lectures. "In the final year of college, the students have two subjects which they finish in about one month, for the remaining three to four months, we send them on internships" says Dr. V. P. Ramamurthi on the internships provided by the college. These long internships give the students that extra edge in terms of industry knowledge. As a result of this, the placement process becomes easier; the students gain skills and are assimilated into the company. The college also organizes as many seminars and workshops as possible to give the students insight into the issues currently faced in the industry. With the rise of techno-preneurship, this college is also making efforts to improve entrepreneurship on campus. The college has started the Entrepreneurship Development Cell. So far there are 20 entrepreneurs from the college. The college plans on expanding further into creating incubator cells on campus and inviting more industries into the campus.

The college also prioritizes on research. According to the Chairman Dr.V. P. Ramamurthi "As an academician, I feel that practical is more important than theory; theory should be there, but unless you implement it, theory is of no use." The Departments of Physics, Chemistry and Electrics and Electronics Engineeringhave been recognized by Anna University as Research Centres. Funded Research is carried out in areas like Material Science and Engineering. The college also has a number of Centres for Excellence, some of them providing certified courses. These centres of excellence include CISCO Networking Academy and IBM Academy. The college has also partnered with NEXGTECH Wireless Private Limited in research and development in the ICT domain. Apart from research consultancy, the college has also taken on 5 projects with the Defence Research and Development Organization. The college also has TLCs with five companies including Siemens, Schneider and ABB Group. With so much research work taking place, closer ties with the industry is being encouraged. The students are able to gain experience from their project work and research work.

To be able to participate in research activities, it is essential to have a strong faculty member to guide the students. Emphasizing on the quality of faculty members is not a compromise made in a college run by an academician. The college has made significant efforts in keeping the faculty members up-to-date. The faculty members are encouraged to register themselves for courses like CSI and IEEE. "We encourage our faculty members to go for F.D. programs and we ourselves conduct Faculty Development programs twice every semester for all the departments without waiting for funding from Anna University or AICTE," says Dr. V. P. Ramamurthi. Industry experts are also invited to give lectures. The faculty members are encouraged to apply for at least two courses on MOOC and to sit for the GATE exams for which incentives are provided. The college has also introduced courses through GUVI. This is based on the belief that, by training the faculty members regularly, ultimately the quality of the courses taught in the college will also improve significantly.

Outside academics, the students are encouraged toventure out and provide services to people of the region. The college has adopted a village called Mallapattu. Here the college emphasizes on the provision of training to the students in soft-skills, communication English and technical knowledge. The college also opens its campus for events like entrance exams and so on, as the infrastructure available is top notch. The college even has an open-kitchen policy where people who are unable to afford it, are fed from the campus kitchens itself. As a result, the college has garnered a reputation in the area for the quality of the students and the quality of services they provideto the community. With a large and green campus away from the bustle of Chennai city, the college provides the best atmosphere for learning. Dhanalakshmi College of Engineering strives to provide the best facilities available and infrastructure to the students. This college seeks to develop more ties with the industry through entrepreneurship in the campus itself.
