Creating Darwinism of Education

With a consistent outstanding placement record over the years, SIES College of Management Studies continues its name excelling in its standards at the forefront of advance learning and education. Out of the 239 students graduating last year in the flagship PGDM program, large majority of them got placed in leading companies such as Asian Paints, TCS, DBS, SBI Life and LG Electronics, among many others with the highest package of Rs. 17.5 Lakhs p.a.

The institute established in the year 1995 provides management courses such as Post Graduation Diploma in Management (PGDM), Masters in Management Studies (MMS), amongst others. The institute also has an AIMA-PGDM program meant for working executives. This program is run in association with All India Management Association (AIMA) and is a 2-year week-end program focused on application aspects of management. Apart from these, SIESCOMS provides post-graduation courses in Pharmaceutical Management and Bio Technology Management that are uncommon specializations in B-schools. The institute takes pride in having introduced such courses and being the first private sector institute in India to recognize the need for creating managers for the health care sector.

SIESCOMS conducts a set of programs and projects that facilitate students in the learning process. Leadership Trait Development Program (LTDP) is aimed at developing leadership traits through a structured intervention: the objective is to develop leaders, not mere managers, who can take control of and lead business organizations in turbulent times. Skill Linked Immersion Project (SLIP), the objective of which is to identify skills gap, is an exercise through faculty-student allocation, exploration, selection and development of specific skill sets through rigorous immersive self- learning process. Market Based Project (MBP) is a new initiative of SIESCOMS for students of PGDM-Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology Management. It is a simulation exercise that helps students to get insights into the real life work environment of the pharmaceutical marketing & sales business functions. SIESCOMS has a Stock Trading Simulation Center in association with Bombay Stock Exchange to facilitate simulation of trading of Stocks, Stock Derivatives and Currency Derivatives. The simulation provides an online stock trading environment and picks up feeds from the exchange thereby encouraging real life training.

The institute believes in taking its learning standards to new heights with focus on to improve cutting edge advantage over other B-schools. The institute has association with organizations and companies to train both faculty and students and collaborations with companies such as Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), Project Management Institute of India (PMII) and international collaborations with institutes such as University of Findlay (USA), Southern Illinois University, USA and Katowice School of Economics (Poland). The tie-ups are of interest for both parties, i.e. for both the institution as well as for the companies. "The business school gains in terms of academic inputs to its own students becoming more practical and the industry gains in terms of consulting, advisory services or training program at a reasonable cost. This is the reason why the business schools are trying to build up such symbiotic relationship," mentions AK Sen Gupta, Mentor, SIES College of Management Studies. The institute is actively involved in building such relationship mainly through corporate training programs. These programs are tailor-made to cater to the various functional aspects or general management, including strategy and soft skills. The institute also undertakes various types of consulting activities as a problem solving measure for the corporate clients and research projects on behalf of the corporate clients. SIESCOMS has more than 50 core faculty members, one-third of them are PhD holders and the remaining are from corporate background having decent experience in the industry. The Research and Knowledge Cell (RKC) initiated in 2012, works on a working paper series which encourages the in-house faculty to contribute ideas and research thoughts and work on them.

The institute keeps special interest in keeping alumni relations; alumni discussion series are conducted fortnightly. They are also members of the Board of Studies and communicate with current batches of students through yearly meets. Various seminars and events in different occasion round the year are conducted in order to break the monotonous ways of learning and instill fresh modus operandi.

SIESCOMS believes in imbibing Indian values and ethos to the students by building the right attitude, modesty, ethics and constant interaction with the social sector. This is meant to bring in a holistic attitudinal growth in the students. "The institute has been honored with many laurels in academic competitions and industry meets and looks forward to build itself as a more visible educational brand with the focus in getting international accreditation and persuade entrepreneurship among its students," concludes Sen Gupta.
