Toyota's New R&D Facility in Bengaluru to Create 1,000 Engineering Jobs
Toyota Motor Corporation is establishing its first Research and Development (R&D) centre in India. The research and development centre will be located nears Toyota Kirloskar Motor existing factory in Bidadi. The facility will start with a team of about 200 employees and is expected to expand to around 1,000 engineers by 2027.
This initiative follows Toyota’s last year move to appoint India as a hub for its operations across the Middle East, East Asia, and Oceania. This program is part of the company’s broader strategy to improve its collaboration with Suzuki Motor Corp. and establish India as a centre for clean and green technologies. The company is yet to start selling plug-in vehicles in India. It has so far been relying on gasoline and hybrid models and a partnership with Suzuki Motor Corp. to drive sales in the world’s third-largest vehicle market.
This new R&D facility of Toyota will be its third facility in the Asia-Pacific region outside Japan, following similar investments in China and Thailand. While initially focused on the Indian market, the centre could evolve into a global R&D hub, mirroring Mercedes-Benz’s Bengaluru facility, which employs over 9,000 people. Toyota previously considered establishing an R&D centre in India in 2010 but did not proceed with the plan. The company is now intensifying its partnership with Suzuki to integrate R&D and product development.
