Tesla and India have had on-and-off discussions for years, yet the automaker has refrained from entering the South Asian market due to worries about elevated import taxes. India has lowered the basic customs duty on luxury cars costing over $40,000 from 110% to 70%.
The country ranks as the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases globally but aims to decarbonize its economy and achieve net zero by 2070. This, combined with the growing wealth of shoppers in the country, positions India as one of the few bright spots for EVs.
