Importance of Multidisciplinary Learning Post Pandemic

Covid19 has disrupted the normal flow of education and created a new norm. While students across the globe have suffered owing to the pandemic outbreak and the resulting lockdown, educators are also finding it hard to carry on the academic schedule without creating major problems for both the students as well as their parents. Online education has been a massive boon for educators and this has helped them to not completely halt the academic year. Looking from an Indian perspective, the government has announced that states and union territories can reopen educational institutions after October 15th. This is bringing a new wave of hope as well as a small amount of concern for both students and educators. The fact that covid19 has changed the global education strata is true and students need to have a fresh mindset to make the best out of the current scenario. Multidisciplinary education is a learning method that has been prevalent in the global education fraternity for many decades now yet many don’t give ample importance to multidisciplinary learning and how it can help a student to have a successful and diverse academic life. Multidisciplinary learning will also help students to increase their employability which is a crucial aspect in the modern world. While there are a plethora of benefits to multidisciplinary learning, lets’ look at what makes it important in the post-pandemic educational landscape.

  • The Importance of Versatility: The recent pandemic has shown us how fragile our economy is and how easy it is to lose a job. Post pandemic, where it will be hard to acquire a job, one thing students can do is to increase their skills and knowledge in multiple areas to become a more all-round package. Multidisciplinary learning is an easy and effective way to learn and train on different subjects. This versatility and diversity are also appreciated by employers and a diverse resume will help to attract the attention of prospective employers. This will help you to get a competitive edge over the rest and start a successful professional career.

  • Develop Critical Thinking: Critical thinking is a crucial aspect that every student should have and this helps the students to think and act accordingly while at the same time remain curious and interested to learn more and develop consistently. Learning different subjects will help students to expand their horizons and develop critical thinking which is massively important to operate in a real-life working environment. Through multidisciplinary learning, students will also be able to hone their creativity and remain strong and enthusiastic learners. This attitude to constantly learn and evolve is key in order to not only be successful but even to survive in the ultra-competitive modern world.

  • Become Flexible: As I mentioned in the first point, it will be hard to find a suitable job in the post pandemic economy and one may not be able to pick and choose which all industries that they are going to work in but they will have to take up any employment opportunity that comes their way and work accordingly. With multidisciplinary education, students will acquire knowledge on different subjects and this theoretical knowledge and practical know-how will help them to be flexible and be fit to work for different job titles and even in totally different industries. This is a massive advantage for a student and this will help him/her to increase their chances of getting employed in the post pandemic corporate landscape.

Even before the pandemic, graduates were finding it hard to get employed and there was a significant skill gap prevalent especially among Indian graduates. The pandemic has only made the situation worse and multidisciplinary learning is one of the very few ways in which a student can equip themselves with diverse skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the post-pandemic world.
