Universitas Gadjah Mada: Transforming Indonesian Higher Education Through Research-Centric Learning Programs

By Ova Emilia, Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM)
Indonesia has a well established and thriving higher education infrastructure with around 3500 educational institutions. Still, as an international study destination, Indonesia is comparatively less explored. To increase the international appeal of Indonesian higher education, many of the pioneering higher education institutes in the country have been investing heavily in improving the quality of education. Established in 1949, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is one of the leading names in the Indonesian higher education space. It is also one of the oldest higher education institutions in Indonesia.

Starting from humble beginnings, UGM has now developed into a top-notch higher education institution that has 18 faculties, one postgraduate school, as well as one vocational school. Some of these faculties are: Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, to name a few.

Most of the faculties at UGM consist of multiple departments as well as study programs which make it easier for students to choose a program that suits them and their career aspirations the most. This coupled with the quality of their education has helped UGM become one of the most preferred educational institutions in the country.

International Research-oriented Education

The dual-degree programs that it has with other world class international universities have helped UGM increase its international appeal. And following their internationalization program, the institute has been able to create a steady flow of international students into their campus.

Some of the faculties that offer international programs at UGM include Faculty of Social Science & Political Science, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Faculty of Economics and Business, and Faculty of Law to name a few. Apart from this, the institute also admits inter-national students through a multitude of programs for different projects. All this helps UGM nurture an international learning atmosphere in the campus which makes cross-cultural learning much more effective.

Located in Yogyakarta which is known as the city of education, UGM prioritizes on consistently improving the quality of education and to achieve this, the institute focuses on research-centric higher education. Instead of just focusing on how research can help its students, UGM goes the extra mile and takes up re-search works which are in line with Indonesia's national research policy. This includes a wide array of topics such as energy, health, transportation, engineering, and defence and security to name a few. UGM has also established various research institutes commonly called as Study Centre and these are used for the implementation of strategic re-search topics. And by maintaining a multidiscipline environment, these institutes are able to offer excellent collaboration potential for researchers on a broad spectrum of topics.

Being an academic publisher, UGM Press has the necessary infrastructure to deliver excellent scientific publications. And using the UGM Press, the institute also offers electronic journals as well as books to make research resources more accessible. Apart from that, the institute also has myriad of industry, re-search institute, NGO, and government agency relations, which help its students prepare themselves for life beyond the campus. UGM also has 22 centres of studies offering a wide range of collaborative learning experience for the students.

World Class Education made More Accessible

UGM focuses on providing education to students from all walks of life. Its educational assistance scholarship for both domestic and international learners who come from struggling financial backgrounds has helped many students experience world class education at UGM without worrying about financial constraints. Apart from that, students at UGM also have myriad of merit based scholarships that are offered by government and private sectors to choose from. Aiming for the holistic development of the students, Sub Directorate of Student Creativity at UGM facilitates various training and development activities for the students that can help them hone their skills. These initiatives have had a positive impact on the development of students at UGM. Evolving with the changing times, UGM aspires to continue its journey in the Indonesian higher education realm to become synonymous with top-notch education at the global stage.
