Marian Institute Of Management: Re-Orienting The Business Management Pedagogy

By Dr. T. V. Muralivallabhan, Director
The realm of management education in India has witnessed a profound expansion over the years, primarily in the diversity of subjects. However, is this development enough to prepare the management institutions or their students for the future? The contemporary business landscape demands not just academic skills but a holistic understanding of the real-world economic and societal crisis.

Fathoming the significance, Marian Institute of Management (MIM), a premier MBA college based in Kuttikkanam, Kerala, has been effective in spearheading a difference by creating ethical professionals who strive towards alleviating the roadblocks.

"œWithout safeguarding the environment and society, no business can truly prosper. Students should feel and act earnestly in any crisis, be it with regard to society, the environment, technology, or economy, and should be committed to finding a permanent solution by having a holistic vision to understand the problems completely," shares Dr. T. V. Muralivallabhan, Director, MIM.

Run on the same belief, MIM's journey as a management institute extends beyond academic excellence and includes shaping conscientious and responsible leaders who not only excel in the classroom but also steer environmental and social transformations.

Established in 2011, MIM is one of the constituents of the Catholic Diocese of Kanjirappally, a seedbed of multiple initiatives encompassing noteworthy educational institutions. Approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), MIM also follows in the footsteps of its sister colleges and is renowned for its standard of quality and distinctive educational pedagogy.

Possessing autonomy, the institute is reorienting the traditional streams of subjects, like marketing, finance, HR, and operations, along with the new and emerging developments in management science, towards sustainable values and responsible practices in a residential mode.

Reinforcing Educational Excellence

Led by a governing board and a highly qualified faculty who hail from esteemed B-Schools with a wealth of industry experience, the institute focuses on imparting student-centric education. One mentor is assigned to oversee 13 students, leading to personalized attention and development. Equal emphasis is also placed on training the faculty members, which, according to Dr. T. V. Muralivallabhan, is imperative in enabling a well-developed learning system.

The methodology of MIM is also exemplified by a dynamic and activity-oriented system that is designed to enhance the theoretical as well as practical knowledge of the students. The interactive sessions, case discussions, national and international conferences, group work, certification programs on advanced breakthroughs, add-on courses, and internships serve as perfect examples of the same. The organization also invites external, yet illustrious educators to empower the students to handle global business roles.

"œExtra-curricular and co-curricular activities are critical to the integrated personality development of students and faculty members. For instance, events like seminars or conferences featuring diverse branches of well-versed experts can certainly elevate the standard of participants and open them to new horizons of knowledge," opines Dr. T. V. Muralivallabhan.

In addition to the external teachers, the students also reap the opportunities to learn from industry experts through the executive interaction programs hosted either within the organization or the Kerala Management association (KMA), Ernakulum & AIMA. Besides, MIM is also marked by its skills in training and placement programs steered by an experienced placement team. Attracting premier companies, the institute ensures that the students are assisted throughout the process to guide them as they get transformed into corporate-ready personnel.

Not just academic and professional efficiency, but MIM also prioritizes inducing technology literacy to make every student proficient in navigating technological advancements.

Supporting the same, the institution also boasts a range of amenities, including a well-endowed campus, Wi-Fi-enabled classrooms and hostels, conference and syndicate rooms, a digital library, a state-of-the-art computer lab, and a gym.

"œBut, with basic infrastructural facilities like the internet, students should also have exposure to social realities outside by visiting other places of Industrial importance," adds Dr. T. V. Muralivallabhan. In the grand landscape of national-level management fests, CALIGO 2023, orchestrated by MIM, stands as a monumental spectacle. A beacon of innovation and commitment, the event unveiled a majestic symbol of stewardship - the Panda mascot, embodying a profound dedication to nature and endangered species.

As if choreographed by the forces of change, students passionately rallied behind the UN Sustainable Development Goals. They traversed the realm of activism, tracking, and retrieving refuse, giving life to a Sustainable Development Goal tree that echoed across the digital expanse, capturing the hearts of social media.

"œMIM's journey as a management institute extends beyond academic excellence & includes shaping conscientious leaders who not only excel in the classroom but also steer environmental & social transformations along with business promotion"

Uplifting Sustainability

"œWe belong to a group of educationists who believe that sustainability is the future principle, which is imprinted in our slogan," shares Dr. T. V. Muralivallabhan. Similar to the rising prominence of CSR programs in corporate entities, which, according to Dr. T. V Muralivallabhan, dominate the global economy, he also feels that a sense of responsibility towards increasing business sustainability should be imbibed within the students, which is evident in the principles and actions of MIM.

"œWe are one of the best management institutes in Kerala and we aspire to emerge as one of the most reputed management institutes in India within the next five years," specifies Dr. Muralivallabhan. To achieve such an echelon, the organization is in the process of restructuring its curriculum and programs, in turn contributing towards a sustainable future.
