In Indian higher education, female representation has marked its all-time high at 2.07 crore in 2021- 22 and females constitute 48 percent of the total overall enrolment, according to the latest All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) report. Female enrolment has increased by 55 percent of overall enrolment (91 lakh), since 2014-15, which means, there has been a higher increase in female enrolment as compared to male. As we see these numbers growing, educational institutions are also making efforts to ensure female enrolment in higher education and creating curriculum specifically for them. There are many colleges for women in the country and all of them are trying to promote women empowerment through education. However, the increasing population of the country is a challenge that is resulting in more eligible candidates for higher education especially in the underserved regions of the country.

Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women is one of the highest accredited colleges with a vision to train and equip women students from economically and socially backward communities with education of the highest quality so that they may lead responsible and purposeful lives and currently showcases the strength of 7000 plus that are spread across 54 programs that the college has to offer.

Being located in the heart of Chennai city and affiliated to the University of Madras, the College attracts students belonging to different social economic and financial backgrounds. The College is governed by the Southern India Education Trust (S.I.E.T) which has established many other Educational Institutions that includes Schools, Vocational Training Centre, and a Dyslexic Centre as well. It has been emerged as a reputed Institution in the state of Tamil Nadu for Womens’ Education. The prime motive of the college is to understand the educational needs of women arising all over South India and dedicate its activities towards catering to all of them. “This year, the College has completed 69 years, and all through our journey, we have tried to support students coming from difficult financial backgrounds irrespective of caste and creed and equip them with quality education”, mentioned Dr Amthul Azeez, Principal & Correspondent, Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women.

Significantly influencing Women Education through its mission, the college has a lot of aspects to take pride in. The college offers 54 programmes inclusive of UG, PG and Doctoral level. To provide Quality Education and Holistic development to students, the college designs and develop the curriculum, adopts Outcome Based Education and has introduced new Value Added and Certification Courses to meet the changing needs. Here, it is worth mentioning that these certifications add immense value to pursue their desired career goals. The college has well equipped laboratories, language labs, smart classrooms with wifi connectivity, sufficient learning resources, automated library, good infrastructure for sports and extra-curricular activities. The college also focus on physical and mental wellbeing of the stakeholders by having exclusive Gymnasium, Swimming pool, Health Centre and Counselling Centre. The research culture is instilled among students through the College Research Centre.

Since its inception in 1955, the college carved a name for itself in the education sector of South India by marking the challenges to opportunities through consistent quality efforts. The college is under the Auspices of S.I.E. Trust governed by the Executive Council and the Chairperson is Bader Sayeed, a High Court Advocate and former MLA “We are planning to enhance the number of programs and courses to add our portfolio in the coming years.
