By Dr. Amit Sinha, CAO
Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy is committed to facilitate experiential learnig environment for students that bridges the gap between the Industry and Academia. Academics has not been able to keep up with the pace of the fast-changing scenario in the pharmaceutical industry, resulting in gap between the requirements & expectations of the industry and the skills acquired by a student during their course. In order to bridge the gaps, Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy has launched additional courses for training students in quality control, production, sales and more as per Industry needs. Operating with a mission to indulge in research and practical training to develop quality professionals, Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy aspires to leave a lasting impact on the Indian pharma education domain. The institute has a structured approach for pairing students with faculty members that match student interests and needs.
Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy acknowledges the fact that far from being an optional extra, or a task to be attended as time permits, mentoring is an essential part of each faculty member's job profile which in turn reflects his/her success as a teacher. For the same reason, it benefits both students and mentors as it advances the discipline, ensuring the quality and commitment of the next generation of scholars.
To create the perfect learning environment, the institute has developed state of art infrastructure that includes seven smart classrooms and 14 state-of-the-art modular labs equipped with sophisticated instruments such as HPLC, UV, AAS, Flame photometer, and Fluorimeter. The pilot plant, Herbal Garden and CPSCEA approved Animal House facility. Apart from this, they also have fully functional Learning Management Systems that enhance virtual teaching and learning experiences. As of now, the institute is heading towards setting up a fully functional pilot plant at the college as well.
While talking more about the courses they offer and their uniqueness, Mr Amit Sinha, Chief Administrative Officer adds "œWe are running Diploma, Graduate and Postgraduate level Programme in Pharmacy. We follow the curriculum designed by the Pharmacy Council of India. Moreover, on the recommendation of the advisory committee of the college comprising of stakeholders like industrialists, researchers, academicians, and alumni, content beyond syllabus is devised to address the identified curricular gaps. Courses of the curriculum are delivered to students using various innovative pedagogical initiatives like mind maps, brain storming, Z to A approach, storyboard learning, reflective writing, etc. Feedback on curriculum delivery and pedagogy initiatives is collected from students. After analyzing the feedback on the recommendation of Advisory committee, corrective actions are taken".
Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy has also made industrial training mandatory which helps the students to get an insight into the entire process of manufacturing pharmaceuticals and hence reducing the gap, and making students aware of current trends, work culture, and handling & working of different types of machinery in the industry. In order to achieve the overall development of students, sincere efforts are taken for updating the knowledge of the teachers as well. And for that, MoUs have been signed with industry and hospitals for conducting guest lectures, seminars, collaborative industrial projects, industrial training, visits & consultancy. Thus, establishing a strong industry-academia interface while at the same time providing ample industry exposure.
Ensuring consistent success is hard for an educational institution, and when asked how Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy achieves consistency in its quality, Amit says, "œWe keep our students motivated by arranging various motivational talks, and career counseling sessions by renowned motivational speakers, Academician, and our prominent alumni. Merit-based scholarships of nearly 20 lacs every year are also distributed among the students. Adjunct faculty from industry and hospital are engaged in teaching at least two courses per year. Furthermore, Quality Control Chemist, Production manufacturing chemist, Clinical Research Associate, and medical sales representative courses under LSSSDC are also introduced in college to enhance the industrial skills".
Apart from these, qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, human and social values are also inculcated in students at Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy. They are also encouraged to develop their artistic, and creative skills. Various committees are formed for developing skills, knowledge, and efficiency to participate. Evolving with the changing times, Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy is gearing up for the future, and going forward, ensuring consistent improvement in the quality of education as well as increasing the employability of their students, will be the top priority for the institute.
With a forward-looking plan, we are investing in research and development activities in college to produce more research brains and skills, better knowledge repositories, and more knowledge creation as well. To enhance the experiential learning and research opportunities for students and teachers, Guru Gobind Singh College of Pharmacy is poised to set up an herbal processing unit and shall work in collaboration with the industry and government agencies.
