Bangladesh University Of Health Sciences (BUHS): A Trail-Blazer In The Healthcare Education Space

In light of changing global economic and socio-cultural frameworks, the education system is being multi-dimensional. Only the fittest candidates are surviving in the fields, and this is true in the healthcare sector as well. Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) is one pioneering educational institution/ university that prioritizes on being a catalyst of positive change in the healthcare education space.
The institute was established as the first private university in health sciences education in 2012 by the Bangladesh Diabetic Somity (BADAS), the second largest health care provider of the country considering the scarcity of human resources in the basic health technology, public health, and allied health science sectors. BUHS is contributing to generating qualified and skilled human resources in the public health and health-related sciences and technology sectors with the overall goal of improving the health of the population.
The university emphasizes a multidisciplinary environment in biomedical research involving biological, chemical, clinical, and social sciences. The Chancellor of the university is His Excellency Mohammed Shahabuddin, President, Peoples Republic of Bangladesh. The Chairman, Board of Trustees of BUHS is the National Prof. A.K. Azad Khan, an eminent scholar in medical research and pioneer in providing healthcare in the country and Vice- Chancellor, Prof Dr. Faridul Alam is ably guiding the progress of the university.
BUHS is committed to generating need-based manpower in the health sector in light of changing global standards. Since its inception, the university has given major emphasis to upholding academic standards with the nexus of theoretical and handson practical education. The management integrates various exercises that stimulate and build up problemsolving and decision-making skills in students. Since BADAS has the largest network of hospitals throughout the country, the graduates will have a plethora of employment opportunities and contribute towards supporting the healthcare sector both in terms of service and research. Considering the demand of the country and the globe BUHS designed its forward-looking programs as- Biomedical Engineering, Radiology and Imaging technology, Laboratory Sciences, Biochemistry, Immunology, Health Informatics, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Health Promotion & Health Education, Occupational and Environmental Health, Non-communicable disease, Community Nutrition and Community dentistry.

BUHS has a team of experienced and efficient faculty members having vast experience in teaching and learning from both at home and abroad. The institute is focused on meeting the ever-increasing need of students for theoretical and practical knowledge to excel in their professional world. The management is aware of keeping the standard of student's education at the highest level so it can evolve and improve. To ensure this, the university encourages its faculties to pursue Ph.D. in their respective fields and undertake training.
When asked about the modern-day infrastructural amenities offered by the institute/university, Prof Dr. Faridul Alam says, "œExpected level of sophisticated infrastructural amenities in a university is one of the vital factors for attainment of academic excellence that ensures sound learning process. BUHS has a permanent green campus located in Dhaka comprising 6.5 acres of land. All our departments have well-equipped labs to ensure hands-on training for the students. We also conduct regular field visits to offer real-world exposure to our students".
In line with its own cardinal objective, BUHS is committed to providing higher education for students irrespective of financial insolvencies and minority issues. Merit order is the prime considerable determinant of the higher education policy of this university. BUHS provides scholarships for students who have excellent academic records, and students from insolvent families. Apart from this, the university also follows the rules set by the University Grants Commission in offering financial waivers/scholarships on different quotas.
At BUHS, regular workshops, training programs, seminars, and symposiums create appropriate opportunities for students to gather practical knowledge on specific fields from experts.
