Nagaland University Introduces UG Program in Basic Sciences

Nagaland University plans to introduce a new undergraduate course in Basic Sciences this year. The University intends to establish a Multidisciplinary Research Centre that will provide additional Basic Sciences programs. These actions align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Being the sole central university in the state, Nagaland University seeks to enhance academic prospects in Basic Sciences. At the outset, the new center will provide 3-year and 4-year bachelor's degrees in Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Zoology.

In the upcoming years, the university plans to launch: Integrated Postgraduate programs in Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Zoology, Ph.D. Programs in all science and social science fields focusing on multidisciplinary research topics, as well as Integrated PhD (PG + PhD) programs in all sciences and social sciences emphasizing multidisciplinary research themes.

The undergraduate/Integrated postgraduate programs will commence with a capacity to enroll 50 students in total across various disciplines (Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and Zoology) in the academic year 2025-26.

To be eligible for Undergraduates/Integrated Postgraduate programs, a candidate needs to attain a first class (60%) in all academic records up to class 12 or any comparable examination. A candidate needs to possess a valid CUET (UG) scorecard in the applicable field prior to applying.

The undergraduate program aims to provide students with abilities in areas spanning arts, humanities, languages, natural sciences, and social sciences; a commitment to social engagement, in addition to soft skills like advanced problem solving, critical and creative thinking, and communication skills, along with in-depth specialization in a selected major and minor(s), either disciplinary or interdisciplinary.

At the conclusion of the first year, students may choose to change their major within the wider discipline (Natural and Physical Sciences, Mathematical, Statistics, and Computational Sciences, Library, Information and Media Sciences, Commerce and Management, as well as Humanities and Social Sciences). Moreover, certain choices will be offered in the upcoming years.
