IIT Guwahati To Host Virtual Convocation On September 22; PM Modi to Address Students

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati will host its Convocation 2020 virtually on Tuesday, 22nd September 2020, with the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi addressing the students as the Chief Guest.

The convocation, in its twenty second edition, will award degrees and medals online to the students graduating from the institute this year. The virtual convocation will be streamed live on YouTube and Facebook on September 22.

Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Hon’ble Education Minister, Government of India, and Shri Sanjay Dhotre, Hon’ble Minister of State for Education, Government of India, will be the Guests of Honor. Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, will be the Special Guest.

Dr. Rajiv I. Modi, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Guwahati, and Prof. T.G. Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati, will address the gathering during the event.

For the Convocation, to celebrate the graduate's accomplishments online through virtual mode, the Institute has created a virtual reality-based award distribution where one can experience an avatar of the recipient of the award collecting a medal from Director's own avatar surrogating him, from the comfort of their home. The Institute has also created a photo-booth, with an option of different backgrounds, for students to take pictures at some selected locations on the campus. IIT Guwahati’s faculty and students have developed a telepresence module for a virtual visit to the Institute.

The coronavirus pandemic this year had led many educational institutions to opt for inductions and convocations in virtual mode. IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Bombay are a few of the institutions which held their convocations in virtual mode this year.
