BITS Pilani Unveils New UG & PG Programs to Boost Interdisciplinary Learning
On March 19, BITS Pilani in Rajasthan announced significant curriculum changes, launching new undergraduate and postgraduate courses aimed at addressing industry needs and fostering interdisciplinary education. The new offerings feature an MSc in Semiconductor and Nanoscience, a BE in Environmental and Sustainability Engineering—accessible to students with a PCB background—and a 2+2 International Collaborative Programme.
While discussing these curriculum modifications, BITS Pilani's Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ramgopal Rao, mentioned that "the swift advancement of science and technology requires revisions in higher education." He highlighted that the new initiatives correspond with industry trends and interdisciplinary methods.
BITS Pilani has introduced an M.Sc. in Semiconductor and Nanoscience, designed to meet the increasing demand for skilled professionals in semiconductor technology and nanofabrication. The program integrates concepts from physics, chemistry, and biotechnology, providing a strong theoretical foundation alongside practical training. The course is aligned with national initiatives such as the India Semiconductor Mission and the National Quantum Mission, aiming to equip graduates for careers in research institutions, semiconductor industries, and technology startups.
Significantly, in its curriculum reform, BITS Pilani has broadened opportunities for PCB students to engage in environmental sciences and engineering courses. This initiative enables students without a mathematics background to investigate engineering areas associated with sustainability, expanding both academic and career paths.
BITS Pilani has launched a 2+2 International Collaborative Programme, enabling students to obtain two degrees—one from BITS Pilani and another from a global partner university. Participating institutions comprise RMIT University Melbourne (Australia), SUNY Buffalo (USA), Iowa State University of Science and Technology (USA), and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (USA). This program seeks to offer students international experiences and educational adaptability.
