AICTE to incorporate AI in BBA, BCA, and engineering by 2026
By 2026–2027, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) established an expert panel committee with the goal of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into mechanical, civil, electrical, aerospace, biotechnology, chemical, textile, and agricultural engineering courses in addition to BBA and BCA programs. The committee comprises AI specialists from IITs, NITs, and other top universities and is chaired by Anand Deshpande, Managing Director of Persistent Systems.
Although the move will make engineering students more employable and AI-savvy, experts warn that when integrating and promoting AI in technical courses, equal weight must be given to ethics, critical thinking, and conceptual understanding.
By the academic year 2026–2027, AICTE intends to implement a redesigned curriculum that incorporates AI, with trial programs and capacity building starting in 2025. Prof Sitharam says, “Every domain has relevant AI applications, and our committee is working to map these systematically.”
The ethical application of AI is another issue that will require attention. A group was recently established by IIT Delhi to define recommendations for the usage of generative AI, with an emphasis on what is appropriate and where caution is required. “We have developed a set of internal guidelines to support the understanding and responsible use of AI. We addressed issues like privacy, bias, and transparency. Ethics can’t be an afterthought, it must be integrated into how we teach and use these technologies,” Rangan Banerjee, director, IIT Delhi, said.
