All India Bar Examination (AIBE) - Eligibility, Important Dates and Exam Guidelines

The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is conducted to check an advocate’s capacity on practicing legal profession in India. The board examines the basic level skills which target a minimum benchmark for admission to practice the legal profession. The examination is done to ensure that aspiring legal professionals have adequate understanding and ability of analytics and legal knowledge.

When a candidate successfully completes the examination, it is awarded the “Certificate of Practice” by the Bar Council of India. AIBE is conducted in 40 Indian cities and 11 languages.

The examination is conducted through multiple choice questions and is an open book examination.

AIBE is conducted twice a year in offline medium for a duration of 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Candidates not clearing the AIBE examination will stay as provisional advocates in State Bar Council and not practicing lawyers.
A candidate needs to appear for the AIBE examination provided it has graduated on or after 2010. Advocates who graduated on or before 2009 are excused from taking the exam for practicing law.

Eligibility

  • Candidates must complete three years or five years LLB degree.
  • General category and other backward class (OBC) candidates should score atleast 40 percent marks and candidates belonging to Schedule Caste/Schedule Tribe (SC/ST) category are required to have atleast 35 percent marks.
  • There is no age group mentioned for the candidates to take the examination.
  • Appearing candidates must be enrolled with their respective State Bar Council as an advocate under the section 24 (1) (f) of Advocates Act, 1961.

AIBE Examination Guidelines

  1. Candidates should reach the examination center one hour prior to the examination commencement.
  2. Candidates are requested to check the examination center location, name and date as soon as it is declared.
  3. Candidates are requested to carry ballpoint pens, (black or blue to mark answers on the OMR sheet.
  4. Must carry AIBE Admit on the examination day with xerox copies.
  5. A photo ID proof the candidate should take to the examination center. It can be PAN card, Driving License, Voter  ID card, Passport, Aadhaar Card or State Bar Council Advocate Enrollment ID proof.
  6. Items that are prohibited to bring at the examination center – Smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, Jewellery or any electronic gadgets.
